The cash-strapped TTC has increased the amount of space available for advertising on its
subway trains, buses and streetcars in a deal that will bring in at least $25-million a year and
opens the door to selling off station naming rights.
The 12-year, $324-million contract with Pattison Outdoor Advertising guarantees about $11-
million more revenue for the Toronto Transit Commission in its first year than the current
contract.

13. It also puts Pattison in charge of brokering any “new initiatives,” such as 3D LCD screens,
digital screens on the sides of buses and subway station or line naming rights.
Regarding naming rights, Vince Rodo, general secretary of the TTC, used the example of a
transit station in Philadelphia that was “brought to you by Verizon” as a possible model. He
estimated sponsoring a station could net the TTC single-digit millions, plus station
improvements.
In an interview Wednesday, Ryerson University president Sheldon Levy confirmed the
university’s interest in attaching its name to Dundas Station in order to help pay for station
improvements, a partnership that TTC chair Karen Stintz believes would make sense given
Ryerson’s proximity and use of the space.
The terms of the contract, drawn up by transit staff, stipulate that the TTC has “sole
discretion” over the sale of naming rights on its property. However, Councillor Janet Davis
raised concerns about a clause that says proposals “may” come back to the commission for
approval. Ms. Stintz assured critics the commission will have the final say on any serious
sponsorship proposal, and the public will have an opportunity to express its views. The
commission voted against bringing a naming right proposal to city council.
“The commission will have the ability to say yes or no to a bus that glows in the dark for
whatever the case may be,” said Peter Milczyn, vice chair of the commission.
The TTC could be facing a $100-million budget hole next year and is scouring for new ways
to fill the gap. The new advertising contract increases the number of buses or streetcars that
can be “wrapped” in ads from 35 to 50 (out of about 1,800 buses and 245 streetcars) and
doubles the number of subway cars to 24 (out of about 700 cars).
Station domination — when an advertiser seemingly covers a station from top to bottom in a
single theme — remains limited to four stations: Finch, Union, Eglinton and St. George, but
an unlimited number of bus backs are available for ads, up from 50 now.
Ms. Davis and other public space advocates opposed the changes. “Not only will you have
station domination, you will have system inundation,” Ms. Davis said.
Mr. Rodo said the more permissive contract and longer term, up from seven years, will give
companies more flexibility when creating ads, and making new technology viable. There is no
change to where advertisers can place ads inside vehicles, he noted.

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is a public transport agency that operates
transit bus, streetcar, and rapid transit services in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Established
in 1954, the TTC has grown to comprise four rapid transit lines with a total of 69 stations,
as well as over 149 bus routes and 11 streetcar lines, of which 148 routes make 243
connections with a rapid transit station during weekday rush hours.
The TTC operates the third most heavily used urban mass transit system in North
America, after the New York City Transit Authority and Mexico City Metro.[2] In 2011,
the average daily ridership was 2.59 million passengers: 1,294,300 by bus, 307,600 by
streetcar, 42,500 by intermediate rail, and 936,300 by subway.[1] The projected 2012
ridership is 507 million riders.[3] The TTC also provides door-to-door services for persons
with physical disabilities known as Wheel-Trans; in first quarter, 2010, 8,900 trips were
made through this service daily. The TTC employed 11,861 personnel in 2008.[4]
Colloquially, the subway cars were known as "red rockets", a nickname originally given
to Gloucester subway cars, which were painted bright red and which have since been
retired. The name lives on as the TTC uses the phrase to advertise the service, such as
"Ride the Rocket" in advertising material, "Rocket" in the names of some express buses,
and the new "Toronto Rocket" subway cars, which began revenue operation July 21,
2011.[5] Another common slogan is "The Better Way".

15. Privately operated transit services in Toronto began in 1850. In later years, a few routes
were operated by the city, but it was 1921 when the city took over all routes and formed
the Toronto Transportation Commission to operate them. During this period service was
mainly provided by streetcars. In 1954, the TTC adopted its present name, opened the
first subway line, and greatly expanded its service area to cover the newly formed
municipality of Metropolitan Toronto (which eventually became the enlarged city of
Toronto). The system has evolved to feature a wide network of surface routes with the
subway lines as the backbone. On February 17, 2008, the TTC made many service
improvements, finally reversing more than a decade of service reductions and only minor
improvements.[6]
