Put these events in the order that you think they
happen. What do you learn about plot structure from
this exercise?
Andrew sat quietly in the cold chair of an indifferent Police interview room.

The one guard left to supervise cleared his throat occasionally, shuffling slightly in his
big, black boots.

Police interview rooms are all the same – uniformly grey, square and squat, like the
packaging for cheap, freeze-dried food.

Artificial light spread itself oppressively into every corner and crevice – Andrew felt a
level of exposure which was until now unimaginable to him.

It was safe to say that Andrew was scared.

His face didn’t betray his feelings clearly, but to those who knew him, the intermittent
twitch in his left cheek was message enough.

The ‘clack clack’ of professional footsteps approached from outside the tall, white
door – the shadow of an equally tall man filled the small, blurred glass and stopped
still for a few seconds.

Andrew unconsciously straightened.

Officer Crane stepped briskly into the room – one great stride and he was opposite
Andrew’s seated figure.

Glaring down, Officer Crane opened his mouth to speak – instead, he smiled.

A sneer, more like.

His teeth slightly bared.

He knew who he was. Andrew could tell.

The two locked eyes.
