HOW IS MORAL CHARACTER
DEVELOPED; STAGES OF MORAL
DEVELOPMENT; REASONS AND
IMPARTIALITY AS REQUIREMENTS
FOR ETHICS
Presented by Group 5
INTRODUCTION
 Ethics and morality have always been subjects that are studied by
philosophers and psychologists alike. From how an individual’s moral
character develops through its stages, to how an individual’s feelings
and reasoning are related, all of these are influenced by both common
human psychology and the individual’s personal interpretation of
philosophy.
 Feelings and emotions are closer to psychology than ethics, but it is
often the ethical quandaries that causes a person to evoke certain
emotions in the first place. This depends on the kind of moral character
they possess, which refers to the existence of virtues (or lack thereof)
of virtues such as integrity, courage, fortitude, honesty, and loyalty.
Let's check out
the statement of the problem!
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
• What makes an individual’s reason and impartiality important in being
ethical?
• How would an individual develop a proper sense of reason and impartiality in
order to be ethical?
• What are the many kinds of influences that can affect the development of an
individual’s moral life?
• What are the different stages undergone by an individual’s developing moral
character?
• How does an individual’s moral character affect their decision making?
This research paper aims to understand how the influences of a familial environment affect
the stages of an individual’s moral development, as well as how they would develop to have
the right sense of reason and impartiality in order to be ethical.
In which the study answers the following questions:
It's time to reveal
the results!
RESULTS
From the survey the researchers have conducted, many things can
be concluded: Only the 4th
out of all the other questions did not
have any respondents that chose the “High” option; None of the
questions ever received an answer choosing the “Low” option; And
all questions, with no exception, had its “Moderate-High” option
chosen the most out of all the other options.
RESULTS
The first question asks how much the respondents rely on their
personal moral values during morally dubious situations. Some
have answered that they rely on them to a moderate degree,
fewer to a high degree, and most are in between.
RESULTS
The second question then asks how much the respondents rely on the values
instilled by the society they live in in order to determine the correct course of
action when facing a morally ambiguous situation. Some respondents have
answered moderately, half of that responded highly, and most are in
between, with an outlier choosing a low-moderate option.
RESULTS
The responses to the third question are one of the least spread out like the first
question, with responses limited to just three options. When the respondents
were asked how big an influence their family was to their moral development, a
respectable amount considered their family to have a high degree of influence
on their moral development, a slightly fewer amount believed their family’s
influence to be moderate, and the majority was of the opinion that it was
somewhere in between.
RESULTS
RESULTS
The fourth and fifth questions are essentially the same, asking
the respondents their opinions on the degree of influence the
schools, high schools, colleges, universities, and other learning
institutions they may have or have not attended have had on
their personal moral development. A minority of the
respondents chose the high option, followed by a smaller
minority that chose the moderate option, with a few outliers
choosing the low-moderate option, and the remaining
supermajority choosing the moderate-high option.
RESULTS
The sixth question asks the respondents how much the culture of their
community and their nation had a hand in shaping their moral development.
There’s a nearly-even distribution between respondents who consider the culture
of their surroundings to have a low-moderate and moderate impact, with the
moderates outnumbering their opposition by a single member. A few more had
thought it having a high impact and the remaining majority considered its
influence to be moderate-high in intensity.
RESULTS
In the seventh question, respondents were asked how much they
value a solid foundation of reason when dealing with the morally
ambiguous. Most valued it at a moderate-high degree, followed
numerically by those who value it at a high degree. Some valued it
moderately while a few outliers consider it of low-moderate
importance.
RESULTS
The eighth and final question had a distribution almost the same as the
seventh, with many respondents thinking impartiality during times of
ideological conflict to be of moderate-high importance, a nearly-equal
distribution of respondents considering it to be of moderate and high
value respectively, and a few outliers placing it at a low-moderate degree
of importance.
Let's wrap it up
and see what
we've learned!
CONCLUSION
With this in mind, the researchers conclude that, on
average, an ASCOT Engineering student places a
“Moderate-High” degree of importance towards ethics and
morality, and reason and impartiality, as well as assuming
that there was a “Moderate-High” degree of influence that
their families, their schools, and their culture have had on
their moral development With that being said moral
character has a huge impact in moral development,
researchers concludes that people react situationally in
terms of stages in moral development such as Lawrence
Kohlberg theory.
CONCLUSION
Furthermore, people react accordingly through the
outcome depends if it is good or bad, the moral character
of a person express by means of norms, culture and how
they raised of their family, moral character is the
foundation of how people think that develops the stages
of moral development in reasoning in terms of critical
thinking of how bad or good the situations outcome if it is
acceptable or unacceptable in social rules and
expectations.
RECOMMENDATION
Future researchers could further examine the different trends between
demographics through the use of a much larger sample size in order to
collect more accurate data. In addition, it also contributes the age to the
deeper understanding of how stages of moral development impact in
reasonable way.
The investigation revealed that the ethics and morality have a huge impact
in decision making considering the norms and culture of one’s person
thought and perspective. We could view the current work as a beginning
investigation moral character depends on how you react on society by
means of moral development and reasoning however, with regard to the
limited sample size, the study's findings should be taken cautiously.
