The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Education Service wanted to upgrade its aging benefits processing system. Edge Systems developed a new paperless system that captures documents as images, processes the images to enhance quality, provides automated and manual indexing and quality control, stores document images, provides comprehensive claims management and reporting features, and uses workflow management. This new system provides vast efficiency improvements allowing over 600 claims processors to quickly manage their workload, with significantly reduced response times and simplified document storage and retrieval.

The Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON) worked with Edge Systems to develop an online license renewal system to streamline their process. Over 60% of nurses now renew their licenses online. The system electronically captures applicant data, handles payments, and allows MBON to quality check information, reducing staff workload. MBON staff can now support most customer questions without transferring calls to Edge Systems due to the intuitive online system.

In this presentation, Jill King from Adaptive Computing describes the 2013 BeoWulf Bash. The free event will take place on Monday, Nov. 18 at 9pm at the Wynkoop Brewery in Denver.

In this slidecast, SriSatish Ambati from 0xdata describes the company's new H20 Open Source, In-memory Machine Learning application for Big Data.
"We developed H2O to unlock the predictive power of big data through better algorithms," said SriSatish Ambati, CEO and co-founder of 0xdata. "H2O is simple, extensible and easy to use and deploy from R, Excel and Hadoop. The big data science world is one of algorithm-haves and have-nots. Amazon, Goldman Sachs, Google and Netflix have proven the power of algorithms on data. With our viral and open Apache software license philosophy, along with close ties into the math, Hadoop and R communities, we bring the power of Google-scale machine learning and modeling without sampling to the rest of the world."

QuantCell is an end-user programming environment for data scientists that allows them to build sophisticated analysis, models, and applications more efficiently. It provides formula completion and recommendation engines to simplify access to algorithms, data sources, and compute power for non-programmers. QuantCell takes the familiar spreadsheet environment and brings the power of programming languages and big data frameworks to enable more organizations and users to benefit from big data analysis.
The IBM Fellows program is a prestigious honor that has a direct correlation to the company's innovation and technology leadership. The honorees include a diverse group of IBMers with one thing in common: a commitment to tackling the world’s biggest problems with ingenuity, invention and inspiration. A common thread for many of this year’s inductees is their commitment to developing solutions and practical applications in the field of Big Data and Analytics. IBM is a leader in the space – with 1500 Big Data and Analytics-related patents in 2013 alone, and $24 billion in investments since 2005 through both acquisitions and R&D – and these fellows maintain the drumbeat of momentum that has made IBM number one in Big Data market share for the second year running.
Michael Haydock (IBM Distinguished Engineer, Partner, Chief Scientist - Business Analytics and Optimization) - From designing the most efficient way to butcher cattle stock, to creating an original dynamic pricing model for airline fares, to when in the planting cycle is the optimal time to spray weed killer on a soybean field, Mike has worked his magic with applied mathematical methods for a diverse set of clients across industries ranging from agriculture to aerospace. His brainchild—an analytics-based forecast of electronics and appliance sales in the United States—has become a staple of predicting holiday sales trends.
