LOOKING FOR AN EFFECTIVE
PROFESSOR

INSTRUCTOR
M E N T O R ?
August 12, 2009
My first teaching assignment only a month away, I decided to sit in on a
managerial accounting class being taught by Ryan Teeter, my friend and
colleague. I couldn’t have made a better move; Ryan was professional
throughout the class period and demonstrated to me the importance of
reaching out to students on their level. Using real-world examples (e.g.
iPods instead of the ubiquitous “widgets”), a relatable sense of humor,
and real-time demonstrations of complex concepts (e.g. flex budgets),
Ryan made sure that his students were engaged throughout the class.
Having come in at the very tail-end of his class, I could tell that Ryan had
spent the past semester establishing a rapport with many class members,
most likely through fielding questions and making things easier to
understand. If there is one thing I feel that Ryan could improve upon, it
would be eliciting concerns from the less vocal class members. However, I
only learned that lesson after teaching my own class and falling into the
same trap of assuming that silence is equal to understanding.
Were I an undergraduate accounting major at Rutgers, I would take
great pains to ensure a seat in Ryan Teeter’s class. He is urbane,
sympathetic, and extremely understanding of the student’s point of view,
and I wish I’d had more professors like him when I was coming up
through the ranks.

with this as I was rarely late or missed class however. Seems entirely too strict though. Absences or
lateness should be allowed/excusable indefinitely -- WITH PROPER VERIFICATION/

purposely be written in a difficult or challenging matter. NO current events (waste of class time in my

“Prof. Teeter's interaction with the class...he is able to answer questions to students who have them during his

class hours, the instructor and the book but the book need to be supplement by something else to held student

knowledge from outside as well as inside of the classroom.” “through teeter tips” “Applying managerial
accounting to current events!!” “made me become more interested” “He has encouraged students to stay up to
daste on global current events.” “It has given me a stronger intellectual growth in learning more about
managerial accounting, partly due to the great teacher.”
In what ways, if any, has
this course or the
instructor encouraged
your intellectual
growth and progress?
“Go over more practical problems in class.” “go little slower...” “I might cut down on the current events
presentation since there is a lot to learn and current events sometimes take 10-15min to finish. ” “There is
nothing that I would have done differently, the course was taught excellently by the professor.” “I would
not change anything as it is already perfect the way it is now.” “Stick to the subject matter. There is too
much to learn and not enough time to focus on anything else.” “Nothing , i would follow his style !” “not
make the exams hard cause no everyone understand accounting, these accounting courses are for
people to experiment whether they have a niche in accounting.” “Nothing.” “I like his teaching
methods.” “I don't think I'd do anything differently.” “Perhaps go over more homework problems. Other
than that, the course has been taught effectively. ” “Let the students know your office hours, maybe put
it on Blackboard. ” “I would not have the student do any presentation, but still have them do two
business article of research for grades, based on content and MLA standards. Capture that time, taking
control, moving pass the easy stuff, allowing more time for the difficult stuff. Those presentation never
got my attention, need, satisfaction, and memory and seem to be a one on one discussion with the
professor.” “Figure out how to make the course more interesting.” “No his methods are pretty good
some people have trouble because it is a difficult course in general” “nothing” “I'd change the method
of slide review, and I'd also choose a better text book with actual examples. Since this class is only held
2 x a week, we come together to review and have little time left to actual take time out to dive in deeper
and answer questions. The class should be less than 15 students.” “Nothing” “i guess i would not
depend on just the slides to teach cause it gets lil boring after a while” “go over homework ”
“Nothing” “I would provide questions more similar to those on the exams.” “Probably not allow a cheat
sheet i feel it encourages me to learn more and pay more attention if i don't have one” “Go more into
detail in the lectures. Most of his lectures were teaching the basics while the homework was greatly
detailed which made the homework quite confusing.” “nothing” “I would take the time to go over the
slides before class so that when I do the examples in class my answers don't very from the slides. In all I
would just be more prepared so I wouldn't confuse the students. ” “nothing at all” “I would go over at
least one problem per chapter relating to the online homework because format is differs from in class
problems.” “Nothing, he gave many real life examples to ease the transition for the students.”
If you were teaching this
course, what would you
do differently?
“I had a great time, and I learned a little (haha) :) Thanks Prof. Teeter! ” “If we are able to
ending class a bit early that would be nice because it is a night class and it is hard for
commuters.” “Professor Teeter is very good at what he does, he is an excellent teacher and
a great aid in helping to understand a subject as complex as accounting. ” “Thank You
Professor Teeter for a wonderful semester! Hope you teach more classes.” “Do more
problems in class. ” “None.” “Good professor!” “I don't have much to say, other than the
class is great, its been a great experience and Professor Teeter is a cool teacher.”
“Understanding professor, with the student's interest at heart. Knows his material
thoroughly! Would be nice if he taught other management courses, the department would
benefit.” “Prof. Teeter has been the best Accounting teacher I have had...including in high
school. It's difficult to apply the concepts in real life and to get your attention, but Prof.
Teeter gets the job done!” “Student should not be restrict to sit by floor plan design. 95%
of my time in the back of the class I had to hear and look at that blabber mouth student
who think she know it all, but could not grasp the concept of PV and FV. There were just
more unnecessary comments from a few individual than relative managerial accounting
question to do with class and the tests” “Great Teacher! Nice, challenging, favorite out of
the entire staff i have experienced! Thanks!” “Great Teacher” “i would just say that the
slides are good but he needs to teach some other way too, may be by using the book or
just something else personally i feel the slide is boring and i have started to loose interest in
the later part of the class” “Great professor and great guy overall one of the best ”
“Great Job one of the best professors i ever had” “He's a great, fun, down to earth guy.
Highly recommend him as an accounting teacher.” “Great professor. He was very
professional as well as helpful.” “highly recommended”

  • 1. LOOKING FOR AN EFFECTIVE PROFESSOR T E A C H E R INSTRUCTOR M E N T O R ?
  • 2. August 12, 2009 My first teaching assignment only a month away, I decided to sit in on a managerial accounting class being taught by Ryan Teeter, my friend and colleague. I couldn’t have made a better move; Ryan was professional throughout the class period and demonstrated to me the importance of reaching out to students on their level. Using real-world examples (e.g. iPods instead of the ubiquitous “widgets”), a relatable sense of humor, and real-time demonstrations of complex concepts (e.g. flex budgets), Ryan made sure that his students were engaged throughout the class. Having come in at the very tail-end of his class, I could tell that Ryan had spent the past semester establishing a rapport with many class members, most likely through fielding questions and making things easier to understand. If there is one thing I feel that Ryan could improve upon, it would be eliciting concerns from the less vocal class members. However, I only learned that lesson after teaching my own class and falling into the same trap of assuming that silence is equal to understanding. Were I an undergraduate accounting major at Rutgers, I would take great pains to ensure a seat in Ryan Teeter’s class. He is urbane, sympathetic, and extremely understanding of the student’s point of view, and I wish I’d had more professors like him when I was coming up through the ranks. -JP Krahel Rutgers University - Newark PEEREVALUATION

Different methods, techniques, etc. to encourage and express different styles of learning MORE PRACTICE PROBLEMS AND EXAMPLE EXAM TYPE QUESTIONS TO PREP FOR THE EXAM (which is pretty much being done already it would seem). CHANGE THE LATENESS/ATTENDANCE POLICY. No personal problems with this as I was rarely late or missed class however. Seems entirely too strict though. Absences or lateness should be allowed/excusable indefinitely -- WITH PROPER VERIFICATION/ DOCUMENTATION, of course. Also, make the exams easier. Unless the goal is for the exams to purposely be written in a difficult or challenging matter. NO current events (waste of class time in my opinion) ” “I would be more precise with my teaching methods and try not to confuse the students as much. I'd also try to incorporate a lot more typical examples to spur some more interest in the students.” “Make the exams easier” “I would change the exams from CPA exam type to a more suitable exam because there are many students in that class who are not majoring in Accounting and therefore should not be taking exams that are intended for Accounting majors.” “I think would hand out more homework.” “Provide more practice problems.” “Absolutely nothing different.” “Nothing.” “nothing” “nothing” “give students effective review questions for the exams” “nothing. I think they shouldn't converge, but instead give a different outlook. then students can bring together what they learned from the textbook to the class lectures and get a great deal more.” “Nothing.
