This document defines different teacher roles and provides examples of activities where each role would be appropriate. 4. Teacher activities Teacher activities The teacher asks a noisy student to speak more quietly. The teacher invites students to suggest topics for course content. The teacher wants to identify gaps in their knowledge so she asks students to brainstorm crime vocabulary. The teacher decides which coursebook activities will fit into the time available for the lesson. The teacher finds a video to fit the topic of the unit. The teacher gives students a questionnaire in order to find out more about their learning styles and preferences.

Teacher roles Planner Informer Manager Involver Diagnostician Language resource Teacher has planned the lesson and materials Providing Ls with information about language and tasks; checking/clarifying language Organising activity, explaining what to do; guiding Ls and managing activity; managing class groupings, ineraction, handing out info-gap sheets; Encouraging Ls to paricipate, contribute ideas (e.g. Through brainstorming) Checking activity is working, listening to identify Ls’ strengths and weaknesses in language and skills Helping with/ modelling/ giving feedback on language; answering language questions

Teacher roles Facilitator Counsellor Monitor Assessor Encouraging Ls to participate, contribute ideas; guiding Ls, checking/clarifying language; This involves teacher providing support and advice on e.g. language and performance problems, etc. No direct evidence of this role from lesson notes, but it’s possible teacher may need to take on this role at any time in the lesson Checking; observing; Occuring throughout the lesson, as the teacher is constantly collecting information about Ls’ work through observing them, and maybe asking/interacting with them at times; giving feedback on performance
