TACRON TWELVE
Commanding Officer,
CDR Ryan “Flip” Phillips
TALON PRIDE!
“MISSION FIRST, SAILORS ALWAYS”
There are very few accolades a command can receive that truly show the
dedication, teamwork, and hard work of a unit other than one we received
this quarter. Tacron TWELVE received this honor in an article from the
Navy Times. One of the few times I would ever want our command
mentioned in the Navy Times. The article was posted on July 6th, 2015 and
it was titled, The Best Commands in the Navy to Make Rank. It listed the
20 best commands in the Navy where Sailors have the best opportunity for
making third-class, second-class or first-class petty officer. Here is a
portion of the article which showed where Tacron TWELVE was ranked.
E-5, Petty Officer Second Class
1.SEAL Team1, San Diego 100.00%
2.SEAL Team 8, Little Creek 100.00%
3.SEAL Team 2, Little Creek 100.00%
4.SEAL Team 3, San Diego 100.00%
5.Center for Information Dominance Corry Station, P-cola 90.91%
6.Tactical Air Control Squadron 12, Coronado 90.00%
This article captures the achievements of our squadron in so many ways.
Furthermore, it was evident to me the one Sailor who did not advance was
without a doubt ready to pin on E-5, and I meritoriously advanced him on 1
July. We concluded that cycle advancing 100% of our eligible E-4s.
Congratulations!
We also welcomed Det One back from Patrol 15.2, and their success on
deployment elevated TACRON 12 to a new level. Talisman Saber, as with
any exercise, is extremely difficult to execute flawlessly and they
conquered that challenge from the start. In doing so, they proved to the
region that U.S. and Australian forces were capable of providing mutual
and coordinated support at the largest levels of maritime and littoral
combat. The detachment did all that while improving combat readiness in
TACC with 17 new qualifications, 7 new Enlisted Aviation Warfare
Specialists, 6 new Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialists, and requalifying
two Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialists.
I couldn’t be more proud of our command, and I’m already looking
forward to highlighting our achievements next quarter.
3. Welcome aboard to our newest Sailors:

"Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop
bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped

number for its emergency communication services.
All military members and their families can use one number: 877-272-

13. In May, TACRON TWELVE DET ONE left beautiful San Diego to embark on USS BONHOMME
RICHARD (LHD 6) in Sasebo, Japan for Fall Patrol 2015. Even though it was a shorter than
normal turn around between detachments for most of DET ONE, the TALONS were ready to
begin what promised to be a busy, yet exciting float.
This would not be the typical deployment for the Fall Patrol (which really took place during
the summer), as the promised land of Australia lay ahead. Once every two years, those
lucky enough to embark on the Fall Patrol get the opportunity to participate in Talisman
Sabre, an exercise between the US and Australia, which also means port visits in Australia.
Thanks to an impending storm that caused the ship to pull in a day early, the crew spent five
days in Perth, where many visited kangaroos at the zoo, took a wine tasting and boat tour,
and simply enjoyed the great food and nightlife offered. Additionally, the ship visited
Darwin for two days for a working port. We recovered the Marines that had been working
hard ashore and spent some time on liberty enjoying the sights and sounds. The TALONS
wrapped up a busy and successful Talisman Sabre with zero flight incidents. The ship then
headed to Bali, Indonesia, for a port call. After a few interesting days figuring out liberty
policies, Sailors and Marines finally headed ashore on liberty boats. Bali was a beautiful
island filled with thousands of temples, shopping locales, and great food. Sailors and
Marines returned with stories of various adventures around the island, bartering at the
shops, and with lots of locally acquired items.
The ship then departed Bali to head for Guam, but enroute King Neptune decided to pay a
visit. He could not let the ship pass the equator uncleansed. Thus, the Wog Day ceremony
took place, and 14 TACRON Wogs became Shellbacks. After the cleansing, the ship
proceeded to Guam for CERTEX. However, two tropical storms impeded operations and
ended the fun early. The ship made its way back to Okinawa as scheduled, and ended what
was an extremely busy, yet rewarding float.
So what else did the TALONS of DET ONE achieve?

CONGRATS ON A SUCCESSFUL DEPLOYMENT AND WELCOME HOME!
15. Talons from TACRON Eleven and TACRON Twelve participated in an Expeditionary
Response Team Exercise (ERT-EX) in Warner Springs,
September 15-17. SERE instructors from
FASOTRAGRUPAC taught lessons ranging from land
navigation, combat first aid, food and water
procurement, and basic survival training. ERT
members practiced landing zone briefs and worked a
robust simulated scenario of controlling aircraft. Pilots
from TACRON Twelve assumed the roles of various
fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft types and each was given the opportunity to
talk on the radio and follow procedures for controlling
aircraft in an austere environment.
For some Talons this was their first time living
outdoors and sleeping in a tent. On day one, unusual
for September, a storm came through and rained for
most of the afternoon, but teamwork prevailed and
the Talons were able to set up a command tent to
keep them dry. ERT
members ate MREs for each meal. Due to the wet
conditions they were able to practice making fires.
Normally when the weather is dry making fires is
prohibited.
After practicing day land navigation, the
Talons were given instruction in night navigation.
For a culminating navigation event, on the final day of training, SERE instructors
drove the students out to a random location in the field and they were charged
with navigating back to camp.
Overall the training was successful because ERT members were able
to familiarize themselves basic survival skills and field living, along with the gear
they would use in an exercise or real-world scenario. This training should
continue so that ERT members are not only familiar with their mission, but
proficient if they ever deploy in this capacity.

21. First of all, I would like to say “Welcome Aboard” to all of
our new sailors. This is a one of a kind command with great
expectations, and I can’t wait to see all the new endeavors
brought to the squadron. I would also like to welcome
home Det ONE, as well as congratulate them on their
amazing accomplishments while out on USS Bonhomme
Richard (LHD 6). TACRON continues to excel and I expect
nothing less for both afloat and ashore.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, TALONS!
