Excessive Force from the U.S. Police
Department
It has been two decades since the 1992 Los
Angeles riots that led to reforms in law
enforcement. Relatively recent instances of
alleged use of excessive force by the police are
making headlines due to racial undertones.
Along with the news, social media, as today’s
new method of public litigation, is adding fuel
to the fire.
The need for discussion begins with the Eric
Garner chokehold case on July 2014 in Staten
Island, NY and the fatal shooting of Michael
Brown in Ferguson, Mo. a month later.
3. In November of the same year, police shot
Tamir Rice, a 12 year old boy. In April 2015,
the death of Freddie Gray, who passed away
while in police custody in Baltimore, was what
eventually drove the public to widespread
unrest.
In July 2015, the Washington Post reported
how excessive force from law enforcement
agencies is growing to become a prevalent
issue. It roots itself in the officers’ lack of
training when dealing with people with mental
and/or psychological problems. This will lead,
due to misunderstanding and lack of empathy,
to forays of violence leaning towards fatal
conclusions. The aforementioned events have
prompted officials to revisit police culture and
deliberate national reforms.
The Relevance of Racial Profiling
In October 2014, ProPublica released a report
detailing how it is 21 more times likely for a
police officer to shoot a young black male than
a white suspected criminal.
From 2010 to 2012, there are 1,217 fatal
police shootings, and federal data show that
black teenagers, ages 15 to 19, died at a rate
of 31.17 per million.
4. Comparing this to suspected white males, with a rate of 1.47 per million, it is conclusive
to establish how law enforcement practices racial profiling.
