A sworn translation is a legally valid translation issued by a certified public translator for representation to Brazilian public sector authorities. A public translator must comply with requirements and pass an exam administered by the local Business Registering Agency (Junta Comercial) which provides a list of certified public translators. A sworn translation does not alter the legal effect of the original document but makes it acceptable before Brazilian authorities. Mandatory translation rates are set by JUCERJA and depend on the document type and whether it is a translation into or from Portuguese. Consularization, an endorsement from local Brazilian diplomatic authorities, is seldom required for private business documents but more often for school documents and powers of attorney.
