2. What is Sustainable Agriculture ?
As per Wikipedia - Sustainable agriculture is farming in sustainable ways meeting
society's present food and textile needs, without compromising the ability for
current or future generations to meet their needs. It can be based on an
understanding of ecosystem services.
3. Why Sustainable Agriculture ?
Modern agriculture has received global attention in three different respects:
(a) Increasing demand for food by rapidly increasing human population.
(b) Rising risks of agriculture-driven global environmental changes.
(c) Rising risks of food chain contamination and associated health hazards due to excessive
use of agrochemicals.
Note : The notion of the sustainable development of agriculture is based on the 1992 Rio
Declaration on Environment and Development, Chapter 14 of Agenda 21, adopted by the UN
General Assembly, and on the 1996 Rome Declaration of World Food Security.
4. Organic Farming
Organic farming is one of the sustainable agriculture practice in which agricultural land is
cultivated without the use of artificial fertilizers, or artificial pesticides, growth regulators and
livestock feed additives. It relies on crop rotation, compost, biological pest control,
mechanical cultivation, and other techniques using natural processes, to maintain soil
productivity and control pests. Organic farming excludes or strictly limits the use of
synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and livestock feed additives.
6. Sustainable Agriculture Standards (SAS)
We SAS – Sustainable Agriculture Standards started our journey in the year 2017
with a mission to define standard guidelines and practices for sustainable farming.
The ultimate goal of SAS is to help farmers and producers to produce sustainable and
pesticides chemical free agriculture product at every step of process.
The guideline defined by SAS is the result of more than 10 years of research and
study conducted in sustainable cultivation and processing fields across geography
around the world, hence one can assume that these standards are the crux of all
well defined and proven principals followed globally in organic sector.
7. SAS is a member of IFOAM Asia & IFOAM Organic International
SAS certified material can be accepted by GOTS
