Delray Beach — The

American Heritage-Del-

Gibbons’ season the past
two years in the regional

headed to a third consecu-

game’s openingminute.

over last year’s state run-
ner-upStallions.
“The two goals at the
end of the first half was
huge,” said Cardinal Gib-
bons coach Margo Flack,
whose school hadn’t won a
postseason contest in the
state series since 2010
when it fell in the regional
final to the eventual state
champion Merritt Island,
1-0(5-4PKs).CardinalGib-
bons was state runner-up
in 2009.
“After they scored the
goal in the first minute of
the game, I was still com-
fortable and the girls were
too,”Flack said. “They nev-
er shut down and we
pressed the net and it was
great to be leading at half-
time.The drought isover.”
Cardinal Gibbons will
play Pine Crest in the Class

American Heritage-Del-

seizing a 1-0 lead as sopho-
more Riley Bethea sent
sophomore midfielder
Sarah Borer down the left

game’s second minute.
Borer cut the ball back in-
side and blistered a shot
past Cardinal Gibbons junior
goalkeeper Ryleigh Brown for a
1-0 advantage. It was Borer’s
14th goalof the season.
Cardinal Gibbons equalized
in the 33rd minute as Stallions’
freshman goalkeeper Jonelle
Barron saved Mackenzie Crit-
tenberger’s penalty kick, how-
ever the Chiefs’ Alysa Vazquez
followed up the rebound and
kicked the ball into the empty
netto tie thegame at1-1.
Vazquez, a freshman mid-
fielder, picked up her second
goal of the match in the final

struck a shot from 40 yards out
over the outstretched arms of
Barron for a 2-1 halftime cush-
ion. It was her seventh and
eighthgoalsof the season.
American Heritage coach
Paul Gregory said the two goals
at the end of the first half were
thedifference.
“Ithink thathurtpsychologi-
cally,” Gregory said. “I think the
momentum definitely swung in
that last five minutes of the half.

nitely thebetter side.”
Cardinal Gibbons made it 3-1
in the 51st minute on Critten-
berger’s team-leading 19th goal

ded its lead to 4-1 just two min-

“I thought we played
well,”FlanagancoachLatra-

the double-digit victory] we
had a lot of defensive break-

tomorrow.”

are both Sun Sentinel Fab 5

Northeast to16-6.

inside on us.”
Dillard took its biggest

about three minutes to go.
Ely cut the margin to 72-70
