Terrific Third Summer Requirements – 2012

Students will use an internet-based program called ixl.com to practice mathematic facts this
summer. One of the many benefits of ixl.com is that students can go on whenever and wherever
they access the internet.

This summer, students must complete a minimum of 100 problems from each of the following
five 2nd grade skill sections:
    1. Counting and Number Patters (A.1-A.12)
    2. Place Values (M.1-M.15)
    3. Addition-Two Digits (G.1-G.14)
    4. Subtraction-Two Digits (H.1-H.12)
    5. Estimation & Rounding (N.1-N.5)

A record of student’s time and progress will be captured and reported on a weekly basis,
therefore, please do not complete all the problems at one time. Problems must be completed by
August 31, 2012.

To access ixl.com:
    1. Open a web browser (internet explorer, firefox, google chrome)
    2. Type www.ixl.com into the address bar
    3. Enter username and password in the top right fields
    4. Select (click on) 2nd grade skills
    5. Choose (click on) the skill you want to work on (see above)
    6. Start Practicing!

If you do not have access to the internet, the local public library provides free internet access.

Reading:
I.    Choose one book from the Non-fiction summer reading list below.
            Non-fiction:
            Astronaut: Living in Space (Hayden)
            Abe Lincoln’s Hat (Brenner)
            Babe Ruth Saves Baseball (Murphy)

II.     Choose one book from the Fiction summer reading list below.
              Fiction:
              26 Fairmount Avenue (DePaola)
              Encyclopedia Brown, Boy Detective (Sobol)
              Chalkbox Kid (Bulla)
              My Father’s Dragon (Gannett)

Reading projects will be completed in school. Please bring your books to school with
you the first week.
