2. INTRODUCTION
Suicide ,derived from the Latin word “Sucidium” that refers to any act that is in
intention to cause ones own death.
For every suicide that results in death there are between 10 and 40 attempted
suicides.
There existed a clear cut explanation of relation of mental health and suicide rates.
3. TYPES OF SUICIDE
Attempted suicide or non fatal suicidal behavior
Assisted suicide
Murder suicide or homicide suicide
Egoistic suicide
Altruistic suicide
Benevolent suicide
Rational suicide
4. MENTAL HEALTH
• As per the World Health Organization defines –
• “… a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own
abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and
fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”
• The WHO stresses that mental health “is not just the absence of mental disorder.”
5. • Thus it could be evidently substantiated there is a clear connection of the
connection of mental health and suicidal behavior
• Since majority of the suicide cases were reported to be the after effects of unable to
cope up with the daily stresses of life and that further in psychological base , to be
known as depression.
6. DOES ALL MENTAL DISORDERS END UP
IN SUICIDE RISKS
• The answer is no since not every psychiatric illness or psychological distress will end in
suicide but some of them in its graveness could and they are
• Other conditions implicated include schizophrenia (14%),
• personality disorders (8%),
• obsessive compulsive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder.
• Those with autism spectrum disorders also attempt and consider suicide more frequently.
• Others estimate that about half of people who complete suicide could be diagnosed with a
personality disorder, with borderline personality disorder being the most common.
• About 5% of people with schizophrenia die of suicide. Eating disorders are another high risk
condition
7. • Mental illness is present at the time of suicide 27% to more than 90% of the time.
• Of those who have been hospitalized for suicidal behavior, the lifetime risk of
completed suicide is 8.6%.
• Comparatively, non-suicidal people hospitalized for affective disorders have a 4%
lifetime risk of suicide.
• Half of all people who die by suicide may have major depressive disorder; having
this or one of the other mood disorders such as bipolar disorder increases the risk
of suicide 20-fold.
8. • Among approximately 80% of completed suicides, the individual has seen a
physician within the year before their death, including 45% within the prior month.
• Approximately 25–40% of those who completed suicide had contact with mental
health services in the prior year.
• Antidepressants of the SSRI class appear to increase the frequency of suicide among
children but do not change the risk among adults.
• An unwillingness to get help for mental health problems also increases the risk.
9. • Thus all these rates states about the dire need of hour – suicide prevention.
• The best suicide prevention could be from our first school of life – our home.
• Nowadays according to the newspaper reports , majority of the suicide cases hikes
during the examination results has bee published over and thus it could be said that
the parents should be the DE stressors for the children.
10. HOW SHOULD WE SAFEGUARD
• Young generation ,according to Sir. A.P.J. ABDUL KALAM ,said to be the most
precious resource of our nation ,yet being at the highest risk of suicide leaves to us
a question of great importance…
• WHAT SHOULD WE DO TO SAFEGUARD OUR PRECIOUS RESOURCES?
11. • The answer is as simple as
TEACH THEM, ITS OKAY TO BE FAILED, BUT NOT OKAY IF YOU WON’T TRY
AGAIN.
TEACH THEM, ITS HUMANE TO MAKE MISTAKES AND WE ARE NOT GODLY
TEACH THEM, THE SWEETNESS OF THE SUCCESS CAN BE ONLY KNOWN IF YOU
EVER DID KNOWN THE SOURNESS OF FAILURE.
AND FINALLY,
12. LEND THEM A HAND AND A HEART TO LISTEN …Since majority of the suicidal
survivors had only one plead …that if they did have heard me out , than I wouldn’t
have done this …
• And as our experiences of life are vivid in their colors filled , learn to accept the
uniqueness the god has preserved in very human mind filled in with vividness of
skills and talents for they were locked in their minds of distress.
13. So this is the dire need of the hour
Be with them in every walks of life
Stay with them when they feel like giving up because you are the reason that they
should win this world.
14. TOGETHER LETS BUILD A WORLD OF
POSITIVITY….
Teach them that -
Having a stable mind of positive mental health is as important as having a physical
fitness .
Not the scores but every second counts in a human life of positivity.
