A look at the characteristics of successful public libraries. Presented at the New Hampshire Library Trustees Association meeting on Monday, May 18, 2015.
Why are you still trying to sell fountain pens in a ball-point pen world?
Are you the obstacle standing in the way of your customer's decision to buy? Many Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) contractors think that they are doing their customers a service by "educating" them away from making a buying decision. In the end the consumer will buy, they will choose to buy from the person that agrees with them and will support their decision.

This document summarizes predictions made by experts that turned out to be incorrect, including Thomas Watson's prediction that the world market for computers would be five, Darryl Zanuck saying people would tire of television after six months, and Ken Olsen saying no one would want a computer in their home. It also shares Clifford Stoll's skeptical views of the internet from 1995, including that people wouldn't shop or do business online, and his preference for physical books over ebooks. The document advocates for free productivity tools like Mendeley and cb2Bib and shares thoughts on the future of communication technologies and publishing.
The document discusses how experts throughout history have failed to predict technological changes and advances. It provides examples of quotes from prominent figures who underestimated or dismissed new technologies like airplanes, computers, the internet, and iPods that later became mainstream. The document suggests that predictions of the future are difficult and that one should expect the unexpected when it comes to changes in technology and its impacts.
Technology trends are difficult to predict accurately as shown by past quotes underestimating the growth of computers and the internet. The document discusses how the top in-demand jobs in 2010, such as social media manager, did not exist in 2004 and how new information is growing exponentially, with 3,000 new books published daily and 40 exabytes of new unique data generated yearly, demonstrating the rapid changes enabled by emerging technologies.
This document contains 25 quotes from Steve Jobs on a variety of topics. Some of the key themes that emerge are Jobs' focus on excellence and innovation, his belief that quality should take priority over quantity, and his vision that technology could be used to change people's lives. He also expressed confidence in Apple's future leadership and his ongoing connection to the company even if he wasn't present at all times.
The document summarizes 7 shortcuts for managing change based on lessons from Steve Jobs and Apple. The shortcuts are: 1) Do what you love 2) Have a vision 3) Kick start your brain 4) Sell dreams not products 5) Say no to 1,000 things 6) Create great experiences 7) Master the message. Jobs emphasized passion, vision, creativity, simplicity, experiences, and visual storytelling to drive innovation and change at Apple.
This document contains 25 quotes from Steve Jobs on topics related to innovation, business, and life. Some of the key themes that emerge are Jobs' focus on building excellent, high quality products instead of focusing on quantity, his belief that periodic revolutionary products can change industries, and his view that following your intuition is important for success and fulfillment in life and work. The quotes provide insight into Jobs' philosophy on innovation, business leadership, and living a purposeful life.

Combined Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) Vessel List.Christina Parmionova
The best available, up-to-date information on all fishing and related vessels that appear on the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing vessel lists published by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related organisations. The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.
To date, the following regional organisations maintain or share lists of vessels that have been found to carry out or support IUU fishing within their own or adjacent convention areas and/or species of competence:
Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)
Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)
General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM)
Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)
International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)
Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)
Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO)
North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC)
North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC)
South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO)
South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO)
Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA)
Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)
The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.
A Guide to AI for Smarter Nonprofits - Dr. Cori Faklaris, UNC CharlotteCori Faklaris
Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.
