Sustainable settlement patterns
This document discusses studying traditional rural settlement patterns. Villages and rural communities have evolved over time based on their local environment and culture. Each village is uniquely adapted to its region and microclimate. There is a distinct informal character and human scale to rural settlements that is often missing from contemporary cities. Studying rural morphology can provide inspiration for urban planners by highlighting sustainability principles that could be applied to urban planning with modifications. Understanding the spatial form and logic of existing rural settlements may provide lessons on creating more human-centric urban planning in the future.
