Business case - from survival to creation and development in UgandaChris Kyriakidis
Part of assignement for the World Bank course: financing for development.
Once in Uganda, I drove through the country. We passed through rich land, with hardworking people. I asked: “why is Uganda poor?” Driver answered "we can’t stand on our own feet because people think only of themselves. Look at the non-cultivated land. No Ugandan has starved to death, but we have just learned to survive and are afraid to take the next step to create and develop.”

4. n One of the biggest issues facing the region is that
each country in the region is building it’s capacity
based on a competitive strategy against the rest of
surrounding region.
n Not only that but even in a country level, each
company is building it’s capacity on a competitive
strategy against it’s own-self.
n This gave the international buyers a big bargain
power on us which pushed us more and more to
compete on price and reduce quality to be able to
sell our products.
6. n Since the end of 2013, a big regional effort had
been started by the COMESA / LLPI to try to re-
shape the regional Leather & Leather products
industry playground
n This effort started by supporting member
countries with their individual country Leather
value chain strategies to develop the business
locally
n With big efforts on both LLPI management,
regional governments and private sectors, we can
see success stories all around the region
7. There is one small thing that need to be done …..
11. LLPI Role
We need the LLPI create an Integrated Regional
Leather Value Chain Strategy that encompasses the
following:
ü Facilitate the business doing environment through:
• B2B meetings
• Trade fairs support
• Trade missions
ü Continue with integrating individual country LVCS’s
into one regional LVCS
ü Facilitate regional Capacity Building and technology
transfer programs
ü Create a regional Data & Information center for
facilitating all business doing indicators
12. The Private Sector
Also we need to move as private sector to play a
bigger role in looking inside the region for
business opportunities in:
ü Supplies (raw materials, components, products)
ü Marketing (promoting and introducing our
products regionally and internationally)
ü Collaborating (passing on business
opportunities around to create economies of
scale advantages)
13.
14. Governments
Support in implementation of Private sector
recommendations and LLPI study results and
findings in:
ü Trade policies
ü Training
ü Incubation
ü Clustering
ü Finance
