Step 8: Making change stick!
There are 8 steps that must be taken in order to create
adaptive change in an organization. “Making the Change
stick” is the finale of all hard work put into the challenge of
change leadership.
According to Kotter:
• Change is often held in place only by a guiding team
(leader). A central person in the team is responsible for
the orchestration of ideas, actions, etc.
• Successful change can be fragile. More often than not,
making a change stick successful is not an easy task.
• It can be difficult in any area of life.
• We keep change in place by creating a new supportive
and strong organizational culture.
Change can be…
• Palomar Hospital is closing in 180 days.
• They will be saving $172 mil. in repairs by closing
down. It is recommended by hospital
administration that this be done.
• This is our hospital, and we need to save it for our
patients sake.We want gain our #1 status back.
We need to act and make the change stick.
• What are we going to do about it?
Palomar Hospital Closing
• The culture of the hospital needs to change. New
behaviors need to be implemented. All staff as a
collective whole need to sit down and agree on
what they are going to do in this crises.
• Create a new manner of operating with patients
and employees. Instead of working against the
grain, change and keep a positive attitude for the
future success.
• Investing in the emotional heartstrings of the
hospital team together. This will create buy-in’s
and ultimately make the change welcomed.
Hence, the change will stick and will be more
likely to stay.
Solutions
• Refuse to declare victory
too soon.
• Use new employee orientation,
the promotion process.
• Communicate the vivid stories to
visibly and compelling reinforce the vision.
What works at this point:
Aftermath
• All hospital staff
agrees that this
change is the right
decision.
• Changes have been
accepted and
completed.
• Patients recognize
the change and
donate more to the
hospital.
• Hospital ratings go
up by 70%.That is
only the beginning..
The End!
