STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Opening Prayer:

Minister:
God of power and mercy,
in love you sent your Son
that we might be cleansed of sin
and live with you forever.
Bless us as we gather to reflect
on his suffering and death
that we may learn from his example
the way we should go.

We ask this through that same Christ, our Lord.

All:
Amen.

Closing Prayer:

Minister:
Lord Jesus Christ,
your passion and death is the sacrifice that unites earth and heaven
and reconciles all people to you.
May we who have faithfully reflected on these mysteries
follow in your steps and so come to share your glory in heaven
where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit
one God, for ever and ever.

All:
Amen.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O most merciful Jesus, with a contrite heart and penitent spirit, I bow down in profound humility before Thy divine
majesty. I adore Thee as my supreme Lord and Master; I believe in Thee, I hope in Thee, I love Thee above all things. I
am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, my Supreme and Only Good. I resolve to amend my life, and although I am
unworthy to obtain mercy, yet the sight of Thy holy cross, on which Thou didst die, inspires me with hope and
consolation. I will, therefore, meditate on Thy sufferings, and visit the stations of Thy Passion in company with Thy
sorrowful Mother and my guardian angel, with the intention of promoting Thy honor and saving my soul.

I desire to gain all the indulgences granted for this holy exercise for myself and for the Poor Souls in Purgatory. O
merciful Redeemer, who has said, "And I, if I be lifted from earth, will draw all things to Myself," draw my heart and my
love to Thee, that I may perform this devotion as perfectly as possible, and that I may live and die in union with Thee.
Amen.

First Station

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

Jesus, most innocent, who neither did nor could commit a sin, was condemned to death, and moreover, to the most
ignominious death of the cross. To remain a friend of Caesar, Pilate delivered Him into the hands of His enemies. A
fearful crime-to condemn Innocence to death, and to offend God in order not to displease men!
O innocent Jesus, having sinned, I am guilty of eternal death, but Thou willingly dost accept the unjust sentence of death,
that I might live. For whom, then, shall I henceforth live, if not for Thee my Lord? Should I desire to please men, I could
not be Thy servant. Let me, therefore, rather displease men and all the world, than not please Thee, O Jesus.

Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be …

Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!

Second Station

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

When our divine Savior beheld the cross, He most willingly stretched out His bleeding arms, lovingly embraced it, and
tenderly kissed it, and placing it on His bruised shoulders, He, although almost exhausted, joyfully carried it.

O my Jesus, I cannot be Thy friend and follower, if I refuse to carry the cross. O dearly beloved cross! I embrace thee, I
kiss thee, I joyfully accept thee from the hands of my God. Far be it from me to glory in anything, save in the cross of my
Lord and Redeemer. By it the world shall be crucified to me and I to the world, that I may be Thine forever.

Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be …

Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!

Third Station

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

Our dear Savior, carrying the cross, was so weakened by its heavy weight as to fall exhausted to the ground. Our sins and
misdeeds were the heavy burden which oppressed Him; the cross was to Him light and sweet, but our sins were galling
and insupportable.

O my Jesus, Thou didst bear my burden and the heavy weight of my sins. Should I, then, not bear in union with Thee, my
easy burden of suffering and accept the sweet yoke of Thy commandments? I therefore willingly accept it. I will take up
my cross and follow Thee

Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be …

Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!

Fourth Station

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

How painful and how sad it must have been for Mary, the sorrowful Mother, to behold her beloved Son, laden with the
burden of the cross! What unspeakable pangs her most tender heart experienced! How earnestly did she desire to die in
place of Jesus, or at least with Him! Implore this sorrowful Mother that she assists you in the hour of your death.

O Jesus, O Mary, I am the cause of the great and manifold pains which pierce your loving hearts! Oh, that also my heart
would feel and experience at least some of your sufferings! O Mother of Sorrows, let me participate in the sufferings
which thou and Thy Son endured for me, and let me experience thy sorrow, that afflicted with thee, I may enjoy thy
assistance in the hour of my death.

Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be …

Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!
Fifth Station

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

Simon of Cyrene was compelled to help Jesus carry His own cross, and Jesus accepted his assistance. How willingly
would He also permit you to carry the cross: He calls, but you hear Him not; He invites you, but you decline. What a
reproach, to bear the cross reluctantly!

O Jesus! Whosoever does not take take up his cross and follow Thee, is not worthy of Thee. Behold, I join Thee in the
Way of Thy Cross; I will be Thy assistant, following Thy bloody footsteps, that I may come to Thee in eternal life.

Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be …

Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!

Sixth Station

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

Veronica, impelled by devotion and compassion, presents her veil to Jesus to wipe His disfigured face. And Jesus imprints
on it His holy countenance: a great recompense for so small a service. What return to you make to your Savior for His
great and manifold benefits?

Most merciful Jesus! What return shall I make for all the benefits Thou hast bestowed upon me? Behold I consecrate
myself entirely to Thy service. I offer and consecrate to Thee my heart: imprint on it Thy sacred image, never again to be
effaced by sin.

Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be …

Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!

Seventh Station

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

The suffering Jesus, under the weight of His cross, again falls to the ground; but the cruel executioners do not permit Him
to rest a moment. Pushing and striking Him, they urge Him onward. It is the frequent repetition of our sins which oppress
Jesus. Witnessing this, how can I continue to sin?

O Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! Offer me Thy helping hand, and aid me, that I may not fall again into my
former sins. From this very moment, I will earnestly strive to reform: nevermore will I sin! Thou, O sole support of the
weak, by Thy grace, without which I can do nothing, strengthen me to carry out faithfully this my resolution.

Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be …

Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!

Eighth Station

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

These devoted women, moved by compassion, weep over the suffering Savior. But He turns to them, saying: "Weep not
for Me, Who am innocent, but weep for yourselves and for your children." Weep thou also, for there is nothing more
pleasing to Our Lord and nothing more profitable for thyself, than tears shed from contrition for thy sins.
O Jesus, Who shall give to my eyes a torrent of tears, that day and night I may weep for my sins? I beseech Thee, through
Thy bitter and bloody tears, to move my heart by Thy divine grace, so that from my eyes tears may flow abundantly, and
that I may weep all my days over Thy sufferings, and still more over their cause, my sins.

Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be …

Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!

Ninth Station

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

Jesus, arriving exhausted at the foot of Calvary, falls for the third time to the ground. His love for us, however, is not
diminished, not extinguished. What a fearfully oppressive burden our sins must be to cause Jesus to fall so often! Had He,
however, not taken them upon Himself, they would have plunged us into the abyss of Hell.

Most merciful Jesus, I return Thee infinite tanks for not permitting me to continue in sin and to fall, as I have so often
deserved, into the depths of Hell. Enkindle in me an earnest desire of amendment; let me never again relapse, but
vouchsafe me the grace to persevere in penance to the end of my life.

Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be …

Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!

Tenth Station

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

When Our Savior had arrived on Calvary, He was cruelly despoiled of His garments. How painful this must have been
because they adhered to His wounded and torn body, and with them parts of His bloody skin were removed! All the
wounds of Jesus were renewed. Jesus was despoiled of His garments that He might die possessed of nothing; how happy
will I also die after laying aside my former self with all evil desires and sinful inclinations!

Induce me, O Jesus, to lay aside my former self and to be renewed according to Thy will and desire. I will not spare
myself, however painful this should be for me: despoiled of things temporal, of my own will, I desire to die, in order to
live for Thee forever.

Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be …

Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!

Eleventh Station

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

Jesus, being stripped of His garments, was violently thrown upon the cross and His hands and feet nailed thereto. In such
excruciating pains He remained silent, because it pleased His heavenly Father. He suffered patiently, because He suffered
for me. How do I act in sufferings and in troubles? How fretful and impatient, how full of complaints I am!

O Jesus, gracious Lamb of God, I renounce forever my impatience. Crucify, O Lord, my flesh and its concupiscence;
scourge, scathe, and punish me in this world, do but spare me in the next. I commit my destiny to Thee, resigning myself
to Thy holy will: may it be done in all things!

Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be …

Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!
Twelfth Station

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

Behold Jesus crucified! Behold His wounds, received for love of you! His whole appearance betokens love: His head is
bent to kiss you; His arms are extended to embrace you; His Heart is open to receive you. O superabundance of love,
Jesus, the Son of God, dies upon the cross, that man may live and be delivered from everlasting death!

O most amiable Jesus! Who will grant me that I may die for Thee! I will at least endeavor to die to the world. How must I
regard the world and its vanities, when I behold Thee hanging on the cross, covered with wounds? O Jesus, receive me
into Thy wounded Heart: I belong entirely to Thee; for Thee alone do I desire to live and to die.

Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be …

Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!

Thirteenth Station

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

Jesus did not descend from the cross but remained on it until He died. And when taken down from it, He in death as in
life, rested on the bosom of His divine Mother. Persevere in your resolutions of reform and do not part from the cross; he
who persevereth to the end shall be saved. Consider, moreover, how pure the heart should be that receives the body and
blood of Christ in the Adorable Sacrament of the Altar.

O Lord Jesus, Thy lifeless body, mangled and lacerated, found a worthy resting-place on the bosom of Thy virgin Mother.
Have I not often compelled Thee to dwell in my heart, full of sin and impurity as it was? Create in me a new heart, that I
may worthily receive Thy most sacred body in Holy Communion, and that Thou mayest remain in me and I in Thee for all
eternity.

Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be …

Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!

Fourteenth Station

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

The body of Jesus is interred in a stranger's sepulcher. He who in this world had not whereupon to rest His head, would
not even have a grave of His own, because He was not from this world. You, who are so attached to the world, henceforth
despise it, that you may not perish with it.

O Jesus, Thou hast set me apart from the world; what, then, shall I seek therein? Thou hast created me for Heaven; what,
then, have I to do with the world? Depart from me, deceitful world, with thy vanities! Henceforth i will follow the Way of
the Cross traced out for me by my Redeemer, and journey onward to my heavenly home, there to dwell forever and ever.

Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be …

Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!

Almighty and eternal God, merciful Father, who hast given to the human race Thy beloved Son as an example of
humility, obedience, and patience, to precede us on the way of life, bearing the cross: Graciously grant us that we,
inflamed by His infinite love, may take up the sweet yoke of His Gospel together with the mortification of the cross,
following Him as His true disciples, so that we shall one day gloriously rise with Him and joyfully hear the final sentence:
"Come, ye blessed of My Father, and possess the kingdom which was prepared for you from the beginning," where Thou
reignest with the Son and the Holy Spirit, and where we hope to reign with Thee, world without end. Amen.

In The Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. AMEN.

Heavenly Father,
we pause from the cares and concerns of our daily lives
to spend a few moments reflecting upon the events
surrounding the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus.
Send your spirit into our hearts.
increase our faith
and deepen our hope in the resurrection.
We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen

First Station – The Last Supper

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture Reading:

During the meal Jesus took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to his disciples. “Take this and eat it,” he said, “this
is my body.” Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them. “All of you must drink from it,” he said, “for this is
my blood, the blood of the covenant, to be poured out in behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not
drink this fruit of the vine from now until the day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s reign.” (Mt 26:26-29)

Prayer Response:

Heavenly Father, will we ever understand all that Jesus has done for us? As he gathered with his disciples for the last time
before he died, he washed their feet to teach us that we must serve each other. And then while at table, breaking bread and
sharing the cup, Jesus offered the gift of himself to his disciples – and to us. In the midst of the problems and pains of our
lives, it is easy to forget that we must serve as Jesus did. As he gave himself to us in the Eucharist, nourish and sustain us
that we might share his life and his love with others. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen

Lord Jesus, crucified and risen,
have mercy on us.

Second Station – The Agony in the Garden

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture Reading:

Then going out he went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. When he arrived at
the place he said to them, "Pray that you may not undergo the test." After withdrawing about a stone's throw from them
and kneeling, he prayed, saying, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be
done." (And to strengthen him an angel from heaven appeared to him. He was in such agony and he prayed so fervently
that his sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground.) When he rose from prayer and returned to his disciples,
he found them sleeping from grief. He said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not undergo
the test." (Luke 22:39-46)

Prayer Response:

Gracious God, while the disciples slept, Jesus, alone and in anguish, prayed for deliverance from death. You did not turn a
deaf ear to his plea, but through his resurrection, made him victorious over death. Our future is often frightful and difficult
to accept. We pray for deliverance from pain, from sickness, and from the loneliness that seems to separate us even from
you. Listen to our prayers. Send your Spirit to comfort us and to help us trust in your will. We ask this in the name of
Jesus. Amen.

 Lord Jesus, crucified and risen,
 have mercy on us.

Third Station – Jesus Is Arrested

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture Reading:

While Jesus was still speaking a crowd came, led by the man named Judas, one of the Twelve. He approached Jesus to
embrace him. Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” But to those who had come out
against him – the chief priests, the chiefs of the temple guard, and the ancients – Jesus said, “Am I a criminal that you
come out after me armed with swords and clubs? When I was with you day after day in the temple you never raised a
hand against me. But this is your hour –the triumph of darkness!” They led him away under arrest and brought him to the
house of the high priest, while Peter followed at a distance. (Lk 22:47-48,52-54)

Prayer Response:

Father in heaven, because they were afraid of his power and message, they came armed to arrest Jesus. The disciples,
fearful that they too would be arrested, abandoned Jesus and fled into the darkness. Armed with hatred, prejudice and
suspicion, we often reject those who are different from us because of their color, nationality or opinions. Our lack of
acceptance and understanding betrays Jesus and his command to love, while our fears imprison us and each other. Dispel
the darkness from our eyes that we may recognize your presence in the people around us. We ask this in the name of
Jesus. Amen.

 Lord Jesus, crucified and risen,
 have mercy on us.

Fourth Station – Jesus is Brought Before the Sanhedrin

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture Reading:
The chief priests with the whole Sanhedrin were busy soliciting testimony against Jesus that would lead to his death, but
they could not find any. Many spoke against him falsely under oath by alleging, “We heard him declare, ‘I will destroy
this temple made by human hands,’ and ‘in three days I will construct another, not made by human hands,” but their
testimony did not agree. The high priest rose to his feet before the court and began to interrogate Jesus: “Have you no
answer to what these men testify against you?” But Jesus remained silent; he made no reply. Once again the high priest
interrogated him: “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the blessed One?” Then Jesus answered: “I am; and you will see the
son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.” (Mk 14:55-62)

Prayer Response:

Merciful Father, the chief priests, having judged Jesus guilty, sought testimony that would lead to his death. Many
testified falsely against him. So often we judge others and like the chief priests, seek reasons to verify our judgments.
Remove from our hearts the desire to stand in judgment, and banish from our minds the temptation to speak falsely about
others. Give us the wisdom to seek the goodness in all people. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

 Lord Jesus, crucified and risen,
have mercy on us.

Fifth Station – Peter Denies Jesus

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture Reading:

While Peter was down in the courtyard, one of the servants of the high priest noticed Peter warming himself; she looked
closely at him and said, “You too were with Jesus of Nazareth.” But he denied it saying, “I do not know what you are
talking about!” Then he went out into the gateway. At that moment a cock crowed. The servant, keeping an eye on him
started to tell the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” Once again Peter denied it. A little later the bystanders said to
him, “You are certainly one of them! You are a Galilean, are you not?” He began to swear, “I do not know the man you
are talking about!” Just then a second cockcrow was heard and Peter recalled the prediction Jesus had made to him,
“Before the cock crows twice you will deny me three times.” He broke down and began to cry. (Mk 14:66-72)

Prayer Response:

Lord God, not wishing to abandon his teacher, Peter followed the crowd from a distance and entered the courtyard. But
out of fear that he would be arrested or called upon to testify against Jesus, Peter denied ever knowing him. How often,
through our words and actions, we also deny knowing Jesus and his way of love. Fearful of not being accepted, we speak
and act in ways contrary to his teaching. Give us the courage to follow Jesus no matter how difficult the journey may be.
May all our words and actions proclaim our faith in him. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

 Lord Jesus, crucified and risen,
 have mercy on us.

Sixth Station – Jesus is Brought Before Pilate

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
Scripture Reading:

Then the entire assembly rose and led Jesus before Pilate. They started his prosecution by saying, “we found this man
subverting our nation, opposing the payment of taxes to Caesar, and calling himself the Messiah, a king.” Pilate asked
him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” He answered, “That is your term.” Pilate reported to the chief priests and the
crowds, “I do not find a case against this man.” But they insisted, “He stirs up the people by his teaching throughout the
whole of Judea, from Galilee , where he began, to this very place.” (Lk 23:1-5)

Prayer Response:

Father in heaven, because they feared the power of Jesus and wanted him destroyed, they took him to Pilate to be
condemned to death. Innocent, Jesus stood silent, not even defending himself against their false testimony. The world
stands in judgment of your ways, O Lord. The values of our society conflict with the values Jesus taught. Strengthen our
resolve to follow you, O Lord, so that our lives may always give testimony to the faith we have in you. We ask this in the
name of Jesus. Amen.

Lord Jesus, crucified and risen,
have mercy on us.

Seventh Station – Jesus is Scourged and Crowned

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture Reading:

Pilate’s next move was to take Jesus and have him scourged. The soldiers then wove a crown of thorns and fixed it on his
head, throwing around his shoulders a cloak of royal purple. Repeatedly they came up to him and said, “All hail, king of
the Jews” slapping his face as they did so. (Jn 19:1-3)

Prayer Response:

Merciful God, though guilty of no crime, Jesus was scourged and crowned with thorns. Our King was whipped and
mocked. It was to free us from sin and death that Jesus suffered the cruelties of his passion. Heavenly Father, through our
baptism you have chosen us as your people and have made us a royal nation, heirs of your kingdom. Through the
sufferings of our Lord Jesus, give us the courage to face the hardships of our lives. Help us to see the effect of our sins
and grant us your forgiveness. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

 Lord Jesus, crucified and risen,
 have mercy on us.

Eighth Station – Jesus is Condemned to Death

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture Reading:
Pilate was eager to release Jesus, but the Jews shouted, “If you free this man you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who
makes himself a king becomes Caesar’s rival.” Pilate heard what they were saying, then brought Jesus outside and took a
seat on a judge’s bench at the place called the Stone Pavement – Gabbatha in Hebrew. It was the preparation day for the
Passover, and the hour was about noon. He said to the Jews, “Look at your king!” At this they shouted, “Away with him!
Away with him! Crucify him” Pilate exclaimed, “What! Shall I crucify your king?” the chief priests replied, “We have no
king but Caesar.” Then Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified. (Jn 19:12-16)

Prayer Response:

Almighty God, Pilate was convinced of the innocence of Jesus and wanted to set him free. But bowing to the pressure of
the crowd, he condemned Jesus to death and released Barabbas to them. Pilate was concerned not with justice but with
public opinion. Forgive us Lord, when we bow to the pressures of others rather than follow the way of Jesus. Forgive us
when we become more concerned with what people think of us than with what we know is right. Open our eyes and ears
to the cries of those who suffer injustice because of our words, deeds or silence. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

 Lord Jesus, crucified and risen,
 have mercy on us.

Ninth Station – Jesus Meets Simon and the Women of Jerusalem

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture Reading:

As they led Jesus away, they laid hold of one Simon the Cyrenean who was coming in from the fields. They put a cross
beam on Simon’s shoulder for him to carry along behind Jesus. A great crowd of people followed him, including women
who beat their breasts and lamented over him. Jesus turned to them and said: “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for
me. Weep for yourselves and for your children.” (Lk 23:26-28)

Prayer Response:

Heavenly Father, how heavy the cross must have been, especially for someone who had been scourged and maltreated.
Not wishing to have Jesus die under the weight of his cross, the soldiers forced Simon to shoulder this burden. Father,
sometimes the burdens of our lives seem to be too heavy for us to carry alone. Give us the strength and courage to
shoulder our cross. And how many times do we encounter others who need assistance in carrying the burdens of their
lives? Enable us to respond eagerly to the fullest of our ability. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Lord Jesus, crucified and risen,
 have mercy on us.

Tenth Station – Jesus is Crucified

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture Reading:
When they brought Jesus to the site of Golgotha (which means “Skull Place”), they tried to give him wine drugged with
myrrh, but he would not take it. Then they crucified him and divided up his garments by rolling dice for them to see what
each should take. It was about nine in the morning when they crucified him. The inscription proclaiming his offense read,
“The King of the Jews.” With him they crucified two insurgents, one at his right and one at his left. (Mk 15:22-27)

Prayer Response:

Merciful and mighty God, it was for our sins that Jesus was nailed to the cross. It was for our sins that Jesus endured the
agonies of his passion that we might be free from the slavery of sin and eternal death. Be with us now. From the depths of
our sinfulness and hatred, rescue us. Forgive us our sins, heal our broken hearts and restore us to new life. We ask this is
the name of Jesus. Amen.

Lord Jesus, crucified and risen,
 have mercy on us.

Eleventh Station – Jesus Speaks from the Cross

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture Reading:

One of the criminals hanging in crucifixion blasphemed Jesus: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Then save yourself and us.”
But the other one rebuked him: “Have you no fear of God, seeing you are under the same sentence? We deserve it, after
all. We are only paying the price for what we’ve done, but this man has done nothing wrong.” He then said, “Jesus,
remember me when you enter upon your reign.” And Jesus replied, “I assure you; this day you will be with me in
paradise.” (Lk 23:39-43)

Prayer Response:

Eternal God, in an age in which thousands of people are called upon to die in the battles of their leaders, we have a King
who gave his life in our battle over sin and death. And even in the midst of his pain and agony, Jesus spoke a word of
comfort to the Good Thief, forgiving his sins and welcoming him to the Kingdom. Father, give us the strength to follow
the way of Jesus. In the midst of our pains and agonies, help us continue to comfort your people, sharing with them your
forgiveness, your healing and your life. One day may we all be united with you in the Kingdom. We ask this in the name
of Jesus. Amen.

Lord Jesus, crucified and risen,
have mercy on us.

Twelfth Station – The Heart of Jesus is Pierced

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture Reading:

When Jesus took the wine, he said, “Now it is finished.” Then he bowed his head and delivered over his spirit. Since it
was the preparation day, the Jews did not want to have the bodies left on the cross during the Sabbath, for that Sabbath
was a solemn feast day. They asked Pilate that the legs be broken and the bodies be taken away. Accordingly, the soldiers
came and broke the legs of the men crucified with Jesus. When they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they
did not break his legs. One of the soldiers thrust a lance into his side and immediately blood and water flowed out. (Jn
19:30-34)

Prayer Response:

Heavenly Father, in your mercy, you did not allow Jesus to endure a long period of suffering on the cross. Weakened by a
sleepless night, the scourging and crowning with thorns, and the agonies of the crucifixion, Jesus bowed his head and
delivered over his spirit. To rescue us from eternal darkness and despair, Jesus gave up his life. How can we ever return
the love Jesus has shown us? May his Sacred Heart, out of which flowed blood and water, be our continued source of
grace and love. We ask this is the name of Jesus. Amen.

 Lord Jesus, crucified and risen,
 have mercy on us.

Thirteenth Station – Jesus is Buried

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture Reading:

There was a man named Joseph, an upright and holy member of the Sanhedrin, who had not been associated with their
plan or their action. He was from Arimathea, a Jewish town, and he looked expectantly for the reign of God. This man
approached Pilate with a request for Jesus’ body. He took it down, wrapped it in fine linen, and laid it in a tomb hewn out
of rock, in which no one had yet been buried. That was the day of preparation and the Sabbath was about to begin. The
women who had come with him from Galilee followed along behind. They saw the tomb and how his body was buried.
Then they went home to prepare spices and perfumes. They observed the Sabbath as a day of rest, in accordance with the
law. (Lk 23:50-56)

Prayer Response:

Almighty God, it was a sad and lonely group who removed the body of Jesus from the cross. Abandoned by most of his
disciples and followers, his body was laid to rest in a borrowed tomb. Father, who would have thought that anyone could
give so completely of themself? To the foolish, his death would seem to be his destruction, but through the eyes of faith,
his death and resurrection give birth to the joys of new life. Help us accept the trials and misfortunes of this life, filled
with hope in the resurrection and eternal life. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Lord Jesus, crucified and risen,
 have mercy on us.

Fourteenth Station – The Resurrection

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture Reading:
When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome bought perfumed oils with which
they intended to go and anoint Jesus. Very early, just after sunrise, on the first day of the week they came to the tomb.
They were saying to one another, “Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked,
they found that the stone had been rolled back. On entering the tomb they saw a young man sitting at the right, dressed in
a white robe. This frightened them thoroughly, but he reassured them: “You need not be amazed! You are looking for
Jesus of Nazareth, the one who was crucified. He has been raised up; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. Go
now and tell his disciples and Peter, He is going ahead of you to Galilee , where you will see him just as he told you.” (Mk
16: 1-7)

Prayer Response:

Ever-living God, our experience tells us that you never cease to surprise us. When the women arrived at the tomb, they
were surprised to find the stone already removed. Entering the tomb, they were frightened by the presence of your angel.
The mystery of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus reveals to us that in the midst of darkness you give light, in the
midst of sin you give forgiveness, in the midst of wounds and division you give healing, and in the midst of death you
give life. Continue to surprise us with your presence and your touch in our lives and in our world. We ask this in the name
of Jesus. Amen.

 Lord Jesus, crucified and risen,
 have mercy on us.

Scripture Reading:

At the sight of Jesus, those who had entertained doubts fell down in homage, Jesus came forward and addressed them in
these words: “Full authority has been given to me both in heaven and on earth; go, therefore, and make disciples of all the
nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to carry out everything
I have commanded you. And know that I am with you always, until the end of the world.” (Mt 28:17-20)

Prayer Response:

Heavenly Father, may we who have meditated on the death and resurrection of Jesus be filled with the hope and the joy of
his life. Confident of his presence among us and of his power to touch us, to teach us, to heal us, and to forgive us, may
we have the strength and the power to bring his love and his peace to all the people we meet. We ask this in the name of
Jesus, who is our Lord forever and ever. Amen.

Stations of the cross

  • 1. STATIONS OF THE CROSS Opening Prayer: Minister: God of power and mercy, in love you sent your Son that we might be cleansed of sin and live with you forever. Bless us as we gather to reflect on his suffering and death that we may learn from his example the way we should go. We ask this through that same Christ, our Lord. All: Amen. Closing Prayer: Minister: Lord Jesus Christ, your passion and death is the sacrifice that unites earth and heaven and reconciles all people to you. May we who have faithfully reflected on these mysteries follow in your steps and so come to share your glory in heaven where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit one God, for ever and ever. All: Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. O most merciful Jesus, with a contrite heart and penitent spirit, I bow down in profound humility before Thy divine majesty. I adore Thee as my supreme Lord and Master; I believe in Thee, I hope in Thee, I love Thee above all things. I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, my Supreme and Only Good. I resolve to amend my life, and although I am unworthy to obtain mercy, yet the sight of Thy holy cross, on which Thou didst die, inspires me with hope and consolation. I will, therefore, meditate on Thy sufferings, and visit the stations of Thy Passion in company with Thy sorrowful Mother and my guardian angel, with the intention of promoting Thy honor and saving my soul. I desire to gain all the indulgences granted for this holy exercise for myself and for the Poor Souls in Purgatory. O merciful Redeemer, who has said, "And I, if I be lifted from earth, will draw all things to Myself," draw my heart and my love to Thee, that I may perform this devotion as perfectly as possible, and that I may live and die in union with Thee. Amen. First Station We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. Jesus, most innocent, who neither did nor could commit a sin, was condemned to death, and moreover, to the most ignominious death of the cross. To remain a friend of Caesar, Pilate delivered Him into the hands of His enemies. A fearful crime-to condemn Innocence to death, and to offend God in order not to displease men!
  • 2. O innocent Jesus, having sinned, I am guilty of eternal death, but Thou willingly dost accept the unjust sentence of death, that I might live. For whom, then, shall I henceforth live, if not for Thee my Lord? Should I desire to please men, I could not be Thy servant. Let me, therefore, rather displease men and all the world, than not please Thee, O Jesus. Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be … Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us! Second Station We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. When our divine Savior beheld the cross, He most willingly stretched out His bleeding arms, lovingly embraced it, and tenderly kissed it, and placing it on His bruised shoulders, He, although almost exhausted, joyfully carried it. O my Jesus, I cannot be Thy friend and follower, if I refuse to carry the cross. O dearly beloved cross! I embrace thee, I kiss thee, I joyfully accept thee from the hands of my God. Far be it from me to glory in anything, save in the cross of my Lord and Redeemer. By it the world shall be crucified to me and I to the world, that I may be Thine forever. Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be … Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us! Third Station We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. Our dear Savior, carrying the cross, was so weakened by its heavy weight as to fall exhausted to the ground. Our sins and misdeeds were the heavy burden which oppressed Him; the cross was to Him light and sweet, but our sins were galling and insupportable. O my Jesus, Thou didst bear my burden and the heavy weight of my sins. Should I, then, not bear in union with Thee, my easy burden of suffering and accept the sweet yoke of Thy commandments? I therefore willingly accept it. I will take up my cross and follow Thee Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be … Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us! Fourth Station We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. How painful and how sad it must have been for Mary, the sorrowful Mother, to behold her beloved Son, laden with the burden of the cross! What unspeakable pangs her most tender heart experienced! How earnestly did she desire to die in place of Jesus, or at least with Him! Implore this sorrowful Mother that she assists you in the hour of your death. O Jesus, O Mary, I am the cause of the great and manifold pains which pierce your loving hearts! Oh, that also my heart would feel and experience at least some of your sufferings! O Mother of Sorrows, let me participate in the sufferings which thou and Thy Son endured for me, and let me experience thy sorrow, that afflicted with thee, I may enjoy thy assistance in the hour of my death. Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be … Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!
  • 3. Fifth Station We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. Simon of Cyrene was compelled to help Jesus carry His own cross, and Jesus accepted his assistance. How willingly would He also permit you to carry the cross: He calls, but you hear Him not; He invites you, but you decline. What a reproach, to bear the cross reluctantly! O Jesus! Whosoever does not take take up his cross and follow Thee, is not worthy of Thee. Behold, I join Thee in the Way of Thy Cross; I will be Thy assistant, following Thy bloody footsteps, that I may come to Thee in eternal life. Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be … Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us! Sixth Station We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. Veronica, impelled by devotion and compassion, presents her veil to Jesus to wipe His disfigured face. And Jesus imprints on it His holy countenance: a great recompense for so small a service. What return to you make to your Savior for His great and manifold benefits? Most merciful Jesus! What return shall I make for all the benefits Thou hast bestowed upon me? Behold I consecrate myself entirely to Thy service. I offer and consecrate to Thee my heart: imprint on it Thy sacred image, never again to be effaced by sin. Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be … Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us! Seventh Station We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. The suffering Jesus, under the weight of His cross, again falls to the ground; but the cruel executioners do not permit Him to rest a moment. Pushing and striking Him, they urge Him onward. It is the frequent repetition of our sins which oppress Jesus. Witnessing this, how can I continue to sin? O Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! Offer me Thy helping hand, and aid me, that I may not fall again into my former sins. From this very moment, I will earnestly strive to reform: nevermore will I sin! Thou, O sole support of the weak, by Thy grace, without which I can do nothing, strengthen me to carry out faithfully this my resolution. Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be … Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us! Eighth Station We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. These devoted women, moved by compassion, weep over the suffering Savior. But He turns to them, saying: "Weep not for Me, Who am innocent, but weep for yourselves and for your children." Weep thou also, for there is nothing more pleasing to Our Lord and nothing more profitable for thyself, than tears shed from contrition for thy sins.
  • 4. O Jesus, Who shall give to my eyes a torrent of tears, that day and night I may weep for my sins? I beseech Thee, through Thy bitter and bloody tears, to move my heart by Thy divine grace, so that from my eyes tears may flow abundantly, and that I may weep all my days over Thy sufferings, and still more over their cause, my sins. Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be … Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us! Ninth Station We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. Jesus, arriving exhausted at the foot of Calvary, falls for the third time to the ground. His love for us, however, is not diminished, not extinguished. What a fearfully oppressive burden our sins must be to cause Jesus to fall so often! Had He, however, not taken them upon Himself, they would have plunged us into the abyss of Hell. Most merciful Jesus, I return Thee infinite tanks for not permitting me to continue in sin and to fall, as I have so often deserved, into the depths of Hell. Enkindle in me an earnest desire of amendment; let me never again relapse, but vouchsafe me the grace to persevere in penance to the end of my life. Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be … Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us! Tenth Station We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. When Our Savior had arrived on Calvary, He was cruelly despoiled of His garments. How painful this must have been because they adhered to His wounded and torn body, and with them parts of His bloody skin were removed! All the wounds of Jesus were renewed. Jesus was despoiled of His garments that He might die possessed of nothing; how happy will I also die after laying aside my former self with all evil desires and sinful inclinations! Induce me, O Jesus, to lay aside my former self and to be renewed according to Thy will and desire. I will not spare myself, however painful this should be for me: despoiled of things temporal, of my own will, I desire to die, in order to live for Thee forever. Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be … Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us! Eleventh Station We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. Jesus, being stripped of His garments, was violently thrown upon the cross and His hands and feet nailed thereto. In such excruciating pains He remained silent, because it pleased His heavenly Father. He suffered patiently, because He suffered for me. How do I act in sufferings and in troubles? How fretful and impatient, how full of complaints I am! O Jesus, gracious Lamb of God, I renounce forever my impatience. Crucify, O Lord, my flesh and its concupiscence; scourge, scathe, and punish me in this world, do but spare me in the next. I commit my destiny to Thee, resigning myself to Thy holy will: may it be done in all things! Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be … Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!
  • 5. Twelfth Station We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. Behold Jesus crucified! Behold His wounds, received for love of you! His whole appearance betokens love: His head is bent to kiss you; His arms are extended to embrace you; His Heart is open to receive you. O superabundance of love, Jesus, the Son of God, dies upon the cross, that man may live and be delivered from everlasting death! O most amiable Jesus! Who will grant me that I may die for Thee! I will at least endeavor to die to the world. How must I regard the world and its vanities, when I behold Thee hanging on the cross, covered with wounds? O Jesus, receive me into Thy wounded Heart: I belong entirely to Thee; for Thee alone do I desire to live and to die. Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be … Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us! Thirteenth Station We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. Jesus did not descend from the cross but remained on it until He died. And when taken down from it, He in death as in life, rested on the bosom of His divine Mother. Persevere in your resolutions of reform and do not part from the cross; he who persevereth to the end shall be saved. Consider, moreover, how pure the heart should be that receives the body and blood of Christ in the Adorable Sacrament of the Altar. O Lord Jesus, Thy lifeless body, mangled and lacerated, found a worthy resting-place on the bosom of Thy virgin Mother. Have I not often compelled Thee to dwell in my heart, full of sin and impurity as it was? Create in me a new heart, that I may worthily receive Thy most sacred body in Holy Communion, and that Thou mayest remain in me and I in Thee for all eternity. Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be … Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us! Fourteenth Station We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. The body of Jesus is interred in a stranger's sepulcher. He who in this world had not whereupon to rest His head, would not even have a grave of His own, because He was not from this world. You, who are so attached to the world, henceforth despise it, that you may not perish with it. O Jesus, Thou hast set me apart from the world; what, then, shall I seek therein? Thou hast created me for Heaven; what, then, have I to do with the world? Depart from me, deceitful world, with thy vanities! Henceforth i will follow the Way of the Cross traced out for me by my Redeemer, and journey onward to my heavenly home, there to dwell forever and ever. Our Father… Hail, Mary… Glory be … Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us! Almighty and eternal God, merciful Father, who hast given to the human race Thy beloved Son as an example of humility, obedience, and patience, to precede us on the way of life, bearing the cross: Graciously grant us that we, inflamed by His infinite love, may take up the sweet yoke of His Gospel together with the mortification of the cross, following Him as His true disciples, so that we shall one day gloriously rise with Him and joyfully hear the final sentence:
  • 6. "Come, ye blessed of My Father, and possess the kingdom which was prepared for you from the beginning," where Thou reignest with the Son and the Holy Spirit, and where we hope to reign with Thee, world without end. Amen. In The Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. AMEN. Heavenly Father, we pause from the cares and concerns of our daily lives to spend a few moments reflecting upon the events surrounding the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus. Send your spirit into our hearts. increase our faith and deepen our hope in the resurrection. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen First Station – The Last Supper We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Scripture Reading: During the meal Jesus took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to his disciples. “Take this and eat it,” he said, “this is my body.” Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them. “All of you must drink from it,” he said, “for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, to be poured out in behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink this fruit of the vine from now until the day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s reign.” (Mt 26:26-29) Prayer Response: Heavenly Father, will we ever understand all that Jesus has done for us? As he gathered with his disciples for the last time before he died, he washed their feet to teach us that we must serve each other. And then while at table, breaking bread and sharing the cup, Jesus offered the gift of himself to his disciples – and to us. In the midst of the problems and pains of our lives, it is easy to forget that we must serve as Jesus did. As he gave himself to us in the Eucharist, nourish and sustain us that we might share his life and his love with others. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen Lord Jesus, crucified and risen, have mercy on us. Second Station – The Agony in the Garden We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Scripture Reading: Then going out he went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. When he arrived at the place he said to them, "Pray that you may not undergo the test." After withdrawing about a stone's throw from them and kneeling, he prayed, saying, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done." (And to strengthen him an angel from heaven appeared to him. He was in such agony and he prayed so fervently
  • 7. that his sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground.) When he rose from prayer and returned to his disciples, he found them sleeping from grief. He said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not undergo the test." (Luke 22:39-46) Prayer Response: Gracious God, while the disciples slept, Jesus, alone and in anguish, prayed for deliverance from death. You did not turn a deaf ear to his plea, but through his resurrection, made him victorious over death. Our future is often frightful and difficult to accept. We pray for deliverance from pain, from sickness, and from the loneliness that seems to separate us even from you. Listen to our prayers. Send your Spirit to comfort us and to help us trust in your will. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Lord Jesus, crucified and risen, have mercy on us. Third Station – Jesus Is Arrested We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Scripture Reading: While Jesus was still speaking a crowd came, led by the man named Judas, one of the Twelve. He approached Jesus to embrace him. Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” But to those who had come out against him – the chief priests, the chiefs of the temple guard, and the ancients – Jesus said, “Am I a criminal that you come out after me armed with swords and clubs? When I was with you day after day in the temple you never raised a hand against me. But this is your hour –the triumph of darkness!” They led him away under arrest and brought him to the house of the high priest, while Peter followed at a distance. (Lk 22:47-48,52-54) Prayer Response: Father in heaven, because they were afraid of his power and message, they came armed to arrest Jesus. The disciples, fearful that they too would be arrested, abandoned Jesus and fled into the darkness. Armed with hatred, prejudice and suspicion, we often reject those who are different from us because of their color, nationality or opinions. Our lack of acceptance and understanding betrays Jesus and his command to love, while our fears imprison us and each other. Dispel the darkness from our eyes that we may recognize your presence in the people around us. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Lord Jesus, crucified and risen, have mercy on us. Fourth Station – Jesus is Brought Before the Sanhedrin We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Scripture Reading:
  • 8. The chief priests with the whole Sanhedrin were busy soliciting testimony against Jesus that would lead to his death, but they could not find any. Many spoke against him falsely under oath by alleging, “We heard him declare, ‘I will destroy this temple made by human hands,’ and ‘in three days I will construct another, not made by human hands,” but their testimony did not agree. The high priest rose to his feet before the court and began to interrogate Jesus: “Have you no answer to what these men testify against you?” But Jesus remained silent; he made no reply. Once again the high priest interrogated him: “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the blessed One?” Then Jesus answered: “I am; and you will see the son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.” (Mk 14:55-62) Prayer Response: Merciful Father, the chief priests, having judged Jesus guilty, sought testimony that would lead to his death. Many testified falsely against him. So often we judge others and like the chief priests, seek reasons to verify our judgments. Remove from our hearts the desire to stand in judgment, and banish from our minds the temptation to speak falsely about others. Give us the wisdom to seek the goodness in all people. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Lord Jesus, crucified and risen, have mercy on us. Fifth Station – Peter Denies Jesus We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Scripture Reading: While Peter was down in the courtyard, one of the servants of the high priest noticed Peter warming himself; she looked closely at him and said, “You too were with Jesus of Nazareth.” But he denied it saying, “I do not know what you are talking about!” Then he went out into the gateway. At that moment a cock crowed. The servant, keeping an eye on him started to tell the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” Once again Peter denied it. A little later the bystanders said to him, “You are certainly one of them! You are a Galilean, are you not?” He began to swear, “I do not know the man you are talking about!” Just then a second cockcrow was heard and Peter recalled the prediction Jesus had made to him, “Before the cock crows twice you will deny me three times.” He broke down and began to cry. (Mk 14:66-72) Prayer Response: Lord God, not wishing to abandon his teacher, Peter followed the crowd from a distance and entered the courtyard. But out of fear that he would be arrested or called upon to testify against Jesus, Peter denied ever knowing him. How often, through our words and actions, we also deny knowing Jesus and his way of love. Fearful of not being accepted, we speak and act in ways contrary to his teaching. Give us the courage to follow Jesus no matter how difficult the journey may be. May all our words and actions proclaim our faith in him. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Lord Jesus, crucified and risen, have mercy on us. Sixth Station – Jesus is Brought Before Pilate We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
  • 9. Scripture Reading: Then the entire assembly rose and led Jesus before Pilate. They started his prosecution by saying, “we found this man subverting our nation, opposing the payment of taxes to Caesar, and calling himself the Messiah, a king.” Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” He answered, “That is your term.” Pilate reported to the chief priests and the crowds, “I do not find a case against this man.” But they insisted, “He stirs up the people by his teaching throughout the whole of Judea, from Galilee , where he began, to this very place.” (Lk 23:1-5) Prayer Response: Father in heaven, because they feared the power of Jesus and wanted him destroyed, they took him to Pilate to be condemned to death. Innocent, Jesus stood silent, not even defending himself against their false testimony. The world stands in judgment of your ways, O Lord. The values of our society conflict with the values Jesus taught. Strengthen our resolve to follow you, O Lord, so that our lives may always give testimony to the faith we have in you. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Lord Jesus, crucified and risen, have mercy on us. Seventh Station – Jesus is Scourged and Crowned We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Scripture Reading: Pilate’s next move was to take Jesus and have him scourged. The soldiers then wove a crown of thorns and fixed it on his head, throwing around his shoulders a cloak of royal purple. Repeatedly they came up to him and said, “All hail, king of the Jews” slapping his face as they did so. (Jn 19:1-3) Prayer Response: Merciful God, though guilty of no crime, Jesus was scourged and crowned with thorns. Our King was whipped and mocked. It was to free us from sin and death that Jesus suffered the cruelties of his passion. Heavenly Father, through our baptism you have chosen us as your people and have made us a royal nation, heirs of your kingdom. Through the sufferings of our Lord Jesus, give us the courage to face the hardships of our lives. Help us to see the effect of our sins and grant us your forgiveness. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Lord Jesus, crucified and risen, have mercy on us. Eighth Station – Jesus is Condemned to Death We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Scripture Reading:
  • 10. Pilate was eager to release Jesus, but the Jews shouted, “If you free this man you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who makes himself a king becomes Caesar’s rival.” Pilate heard what they were saying, then brought Jesus outside and took a seat on a judge’s bench at the place called the Stone Pavement – Gabbatha in Hebrew. It was the preparation day for the Passover, and the hour was about noon. He said to the Jews, “Look at your king!” At this they shouted, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him” Pilate exclaimed, “What! Shall I crucify your king?” the chief priests replied, “We have no king but Caesar.” Then Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified. (Jn 19:12-16) Prayer Response: Almighty God, Pilate was convinced of the innocence of Jesus and wanted to set him free. But bowing to the pressure of the crowd, he condemned Jesus to death and released Barabbas to them. Pilate was concerned not with justice but with public opinion. Forgive us Lord, when we bow to the pressures of others rather than follow the way of Jesus. Forgive us when we become more concerned with what people think of us than with what we know is right. Open our eyes and ears to the cries of those who suffer injustice because of our words, deeds or silence. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Lord Jesus, crucified and risen, have mercy on us. Ninth Station – Jesus Meets Simon and the Women of Jerusalem We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Scripture Reading: As they led Jesus away, they laid hold of one Simon the Cyrenean who was coming in from the fields. They put a cross beam on Simon’s shoulder for him to carry along behind Jesus. A great crowd of people followed him, including women who beat their breasts and lamented over him. Jesus turned to them and said: “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. Weep for yourselves and for your children.” (Lk 23:26-28) Prayer Response: Heavenly Father, how heavy the cross must have been, especially for someone who had been scourged and maltreated. Not wishing to have Jesus die under the weight of his cross, the soldiers forced Simon to shoulder this burden. Father, sometimes the burdens of our lives seem to be too heavy for us to carry alone. Give us the strength and courage to shoulder our cross. And how many times do we encounter others who need assistance in carrying the burdens of their lives? Enable us to respond eagerly to the fullest of our ability. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Lord Jesus, crucified and risen, have mercy on us. Tenth Station – Jesus is Crucified We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Scripture Reading:
  • 11. When they brought Jesus to the site of Golgotha (which means “Skull Place”), they tried to give him wine drugged with myrrh, but he would not take it. Then they crucified him and divided up his garments by rolling dice for them to see what each should take. It was about nine in the morning when they crucified him. The inscription proclaiming his offense read, “The King of the Jews.” With him they crucified two insurgents, one at his right and one at his left. (Mk 15:22-27) Prayer Response: Merciful and mighty God, it was for our sins that Jesus was nailed to the cross. It was for our sins that Jesus endured the agonies of his passion that we might be free from the slavery of sin and eternal death. Be with us now. From the depths of our sinfulness and hatred, rescue us. Forgive us our sins, heal our broken hearts and restore us to new life. We ask this is the name of Jesus. Amen. Lord Jesus, crucified and risen, have mercy on us. Eleventh Station – Jesus Speaks from the Cross We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Scripture Reading: One of the criminals hanging in crucifixion blasphemed Jesus: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Then save yourself and us.” But the other one rebuked him: “Have you no fear of God, seeing you are under the same sentence? We deserve it, after all. We are only paying the price for what we’ve done, but this man has done nothing wrong.” He then said, “Jesus, remember me when you enter upon your reign.” And Jesus replied, “I assure you; this day you will be with me in paradise.” (Lk 23:39-43) Prayer Response: Eternal God, in an age in which thousands of people are called upon to die in the battles of their leaders, we have a King who gave his life in our battle over sin and death. And even in the midst of his pain and agony, Jesus spoke a word of comfort to the Good Thief, forgiving his sins and welcoming him to the Kingdom. Father, give us the strength to follow the way of Jesus. In the midst of our pains and agonies, help us continue to comfort your people, sharing with them your forgiveness, your healing and your life. One day may we all be united with you in the Kingdom. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Lord Jesus, crucified and risen, have mercy on us. Twelfth Station – The Heart of Jesus is Pierced We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Scripture Reading: When Jesus took the wine, he said, “Now it is finished.” Then he bowed his head and delivered over his spirit. Since it was the preparation day, the Jews did not want to have the bodies left on the cross during the Sabbath, for that Sabbath
  • 12. was a solemn feast day. They asked Pilate that the legs be broken and the bodies be taken away. Accordingly, the soldiers came and broke the legs of the men crucified with Jesus. When they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. One of the soldiers thrust a lance into his side and immediately blood and water flowed out. (Jn 19:30-34) Prayer Response: Heavenly Father, in your mercy, you did not allow Jesus to endure a long period of suffering on the cross. Weakened by a sleepless night, the scourging and crowning with thorns, and the agonies of the crucifixion, Jesus bowed his head and delivered over his spirit. To rescue us from eternal darkness and despair, Jesus gave up his life. How can we ever return the love Jesus has shown us? May his Sacred Heart, out of which flowed blood and water, be our continued source of grace and love. We ask this is the name of Jesus. Amen. Lord Jesus, crucified and risen, have mercy on us. Thirteenth Station – Jesus is Buried We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Scripture Reading: There was a man named Joseph, an upright and holy member of the Sanhedrin, who had not been associated with their plan or their action. He was from Arimathea, a Jewish town, and he looked expectantly for the reign of God. This man approached Pilate with a request for Jesus’ body. He took it down, wrapped it in fine linen, and laid it in a tomb hewn out of rock, in which no one had yet been buried. That was the day of preparation and the Sabbath was about to begin. The women who had come with him from Galilee followed along behind. They saw the tomb and how his body was buried. Then they went home to prepare spices and perfumes. They observed the Sabbath as a day of rest, in accordance with the law. (Lk 23:50-56) Prayer Response: Almighty God, it was a sad and lonely group who removed the body of Jesus from the cross. Abandoned by most of his disciples and followers, his body was laid to rest in a borrowed tomb. Father, who would have thought that anyone could give so completely of themself? To the foolish, his death would seem to be his destruction, but through the eyes of faith, his death and resurrection give birth to the joys of new life. Help us accept the trials and misfortunes of this life, filled with hope in the resurrection and eternal life. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Lord Jesus, crucified and risen, have mercy on us. Fourteenth Station – The Resurrection We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Scripture Reading:
  • 13. When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome bought perfumed oils with which they intended to go and anoint Jesus. Very early, just after sunrise, on the first day of the week they came to the tomb. They were saying to one another, “Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked, they found that the stone had been rolled back. On entering the tomb they saw a young man sitting at the right, dressed in a white robe. This frightened them thoroughly, but he reassured them: “You need not be amazed! You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, the one who was crucified. He has been raised up; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. Go now and tell his disciples and Peter, He is going ahead of you to Galilee , where you will see him just as he told you.” (Mk 16: 1-7) Prayer Response: Ever-living God, our experience tells us that you never cease to surprise us. When the women arrived at the tomb, they were surprised to find the stone already removed. Entering the tomb, they were frightened by the presence of your angel. The mystery of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus reveals to us that in the midst of darkness you give light, in the midst of sin you give forgiveness, in the midst of wounds and division you give healing, and in the midst of death you give life. Continue to surprise us with your presence and your touch in our lives and in our world. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Lord Jesus, crucified and risen, have mercy on us. Scripture Reading: At the sight of Jesus, those who had entertained doubts fell down in homage, Jesus came forward and addressed them in these words: “Full authority has been given to me both in heaven and on earth; go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to carry out everything I have commanded you. And know that I am with you always, until the end of the world.” (Mt 28:17-20) Prayer Response: Heavenly Father, may we who have meditated on the death and resurrection of Jesus be filled with the hope and the joy of his life. Confident of his presence among us and of his power to touch us, to teach us, to heal us, and to forgive us, may we have the strength and the power to bring his love and his peace to all the people we meet. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who is our Lord forever and ever. Amen. 1. The Last Supper 2. The Garden of Gethsemane 3. Jesus Before Pilate 4. The Scourging and The Crowning with Thorns 5.
