Arman is a kind man who helps anyone in need. However, he has no money after his wife throws him out and his so-called friends take advantage of his kindness. On his last day in his rented apartment, various people come by asking for favors or money, including musicians needing a place to entertain women, relatives needing a place to stay, drunk friends, a man confessing to murder, and a man coming to collect a debt through violence. By the end, Arman realizes that helping others is the purpose of his life, despite being used by many.

1. STARLING.
Synopsis.

In faded grass three Afghani starlings beat the fourth starling.
Action takes place in one-room apartment.
His name is Arman. He is very kind young man. Everyone uses him and he helps to
anybody asking for help. This film tells about kindness.
For unknown reasons his wife throw him out of his home and now he lives alone in a
rented apartment. We observe him during the last day of living in the apartment
because he has no money to pay for the rent of the apartment on the next month.
And in this last day many so-called friends come to him.
Talgat – the musician. Periodically he comes to Arman with the new girl to spend with
her pair of hours, thus expels Arman to the kitchen. His order of a pizza for Arman's
address (in Arman’s absence) became deification of his impudence, and Arman had to
pay for the pizza by his last money.
Zhayik – his another “friend”. A heap of relatives came to him from Uzbekistan and
Zhayik doesn’t know what to do. The Uzbek relatives ate all his food and engaged all
his flat. And he wants to stay for few days in the Arman’s apartment. But Arman cannot
help him because it’s his last day in the apartment. Zhayik eats last meal from Arman’s
pan and leaves Arman alone.
Olya and Asel. Two friends, two girls. Every day they come to have a drink of vodka to
Arman and to chat about any nonsense. It seems they are alcoholics and only Arman is
allowed to see them drunk.
The 40 years old man. He tells to Arman an terrible story about a murder he made
long time ago. The story shocks Arman. And the man goes out after taking some coins
from Arman.
The Ratman – the old man. He’s from municipal service. He comes to check up,
whether mouses and rats are in the apartment. He sniffs up each corner in the flat. And
he finds nothing. Anyway the Ratman demands money for the "service". And Arman
pays giving last coins.
Jealousy man.. He accuses Arman that Arman is a lover of his wife. And for some
reason he names Arman as Serik – clearly that he was mistaken and Arman didn’t do
anything bad to this guy. Arman is hardly pulled out from his hands and closes the door.
The brother of Arman’s wife. He comes, enraged, shouts at Arman that he has spoilt
the life of his sister, and in the end he throws out on Arman a dust bucket.
The silent girl. She behaves strange, she’s always silent. And then she says that her
parents bought an apartment for her, and she’s wondering whether Armand wishes to
live with her in this apartment? She is enamoured Arman. But Arman loves his wife. The
girl leaves.

2. Kazbek. He studies as the cameraman at an institute of arts and comes to Arman to
shoot an episode for his diploma film in Arman's apartment. He brought to Arman’s flat
a heap of people and shoots them in the chamber – everyone speaks about their
dream. And the last of the personages is Arman. But Arman cannot say a word, tears
start to flow from his eyes. He cannot tell about his dream. Perhaps he has no dream.
Kazbek leaves him.
The Puny man with the bodyguard. A month ago he borrowed money to Arman for
apartment rent, and now he comes to take away the money back. But Arman has no
money at all. And the bodyguard of the Puny man cruelly beats Arman while the Puny
man reads aloud Dostoevsky’s White Nights.
And, at last, the land lady of the apartment comes. Arman collects all his things and
leaves the apartment to nowhere.
Night. Arman goes along the street. And here he is caught up with this jealousy guy
who again starts to accuse Arman that he is a lover of his wife. The friends of the
jealousy guy come. They surround Arman and he faints. Arman falls down.
In the morning Arman finds himself in a hospital chamber. Here are everybody who
came to his apartment. And again all they start to demand and ask something from
Arman. Arman looks at them silently – and suddenly he starts to smile. He understands
that in his life it’s the only way to live. He understands that the sense of his life is to help
another people. It’s not punishment, it’s not an award – it’s just his life.
