The Youth Team have been busy with
a full on summer delivery in Lewes
and Newhaven – we enjoyed sessions
at Pells Pool and the cinema and lots
of other fun and exciting activities! The
Newhaven Families Forum have run
very successful workshops for local
families. 73 children and their
families kicked off the summer with a
Newhaven Treasure Hunt.
Just over 100 young people joined in
with a Skate Park Event which
featured Matti Hemmings, a record
breaking BMX Flat Rider. The afternoon
was a big success! We saw Skate
Boarders, BMX riders and Scooters
competing for amazing prizes.
Thank you to Matt Davey for hosting
the event and managing to get the
brilliant prizes and to Suzi Laver for
coming to help out our Youth Team.
Pat Hewson has decided to hang
up her Facilities hi-vis vest and
take retirement to spend more
time with her grandchildren. Pat
has been a familiar friendly face
at SCDA for almost seven years.
A very happy retirement Pat -
you will be missed!

Care & Support
Health & Well-being
And from the Haven Project (for people who have been sexually abused): ‘I feel so deeply grateful for
this amazing service you all so generously provide the community – myself. To work alongside another
who has special training and supervision has been something I’ve been looking for, for most of my life.’
A fun, free wellbeing event was hosted by Eastbourne Health Champions and Sussex Oakleaf in
collaboration with Eastbourne Borough Council and Creative Force at Eastbourne Town Hall. The event
was particularly promoted in the BAME community and provided ideas to promote a healthier mind and
a healthier body. Free taster sessions included yoga, bread making, singing, mindfulness, shiatzu and
calligraphy with tasty food and drink to sample too. The event was so successful that Jay and Sue from
Eastbourne Health Champions are planning an even larger event next year!
Staff Profile
Phoenix Centre clients enjoyed a
homemade lunch at the Gallery
Community Café in Crowborough this
month. A big thank you to the chef
Alistair and his team who made our
clients feel so welcome! The lunch was
delicious – homemade fish pie and
peach crumble. It was the first of a
series of days out the Phoenix team
hope to put in place.
An Open Spaces event for Steps into Wellbeing
- a great group of local families joined together
for a picnic and beach explore at Tidemills. It
was a fabulous day – though a little windy!
Some rewarding feedback from Counselling
clients: ‘For the first time for a long while I feel
OK (never thought I would say that again). Thank
you ever so much’.
Hi I’m Michelle Reid and I have worked at SCDA for 10 years, most of which
has been in the Nursery. My current position is as the Early Years
Professional in the Nursery where I work as part of the management team
ensuring that we are delivering high quality care and education for children
from birth to five years of age. I also work as part of the family learning team
supporting quality development of the provision for groups aimed in the same
age range. Most recently I have taken on a training role beyond the nursery
delivering SCDA’s Level One Safeguarding training and it has been great to
meet staff from the wider SCDA team.
Outside of work I spend free time in my garden where I have been creating a
wildlife friendly space filled with as many plants, trees and flowers as I can fit
into small space and looking after my sister’s loveable but over excitable
staffie!
