What can we learn from the future? - Imogen Casebourne and Lars Hyland @ Lear...Epic
Imogen Casebourne and Lars Hyland presented a seminar at Learning Technologies on 29th January 2014 at Olympia 2 in London. This presentation revisits some of the major trends in e-learning spotted by Epic over the years, including mobile learning and simulations. It also takes inspiration from what we think will be major future trends, including wearable technology such as Google Glass and smart watches.
The document discusses using high throughput ab initio calculations and quantum simulation to screen materials for fuel cell catalyst applications. It aims to find alternatives to platinum by exploring large phase spaces of alloy combinations, microstructures, and properties through automated computational screening of thousands of materials. The approach involves generating representative surface models of alloy catalysts, calculating key properties related to oxygen reduction reaction activity and bonding, and accumulating the data in a database for analysis and reporting. Plane wave density functional theory is used with high throughput strategies to efficiently screen materials at a scale not possible through experiment alone. An example of screening Pt3Co alloys is given where over 1820 configurations are generated and reduced to 133 non-equivalent configurations through symmetry considerations.
