This document defines living things and classifies animals. Living things are born, grow, reproduce, and die. Animals are classified based on their skeleton (vertebrates have backbones, invertebrates do not), diet (carnivores eat other animals, herbivores eat plants, omnivores eat both), and birth (oviparous animals lay eggs, viviparous animals are born alive from their mother's uterus). Mammals are defined as viviparous vertebrates that feed their young milk. Examples of mammals and their characteristics are provided for carnivores like wolves, herbivores like horses, and omnivores like bears.
