This document discusses the importance of numeracy and mathematical literacy for understanding social studies concepts and making informed decisions as citizens. It argues that numeracy will be as important as literacy for participation in modern society. It provides examples of how raw numbers, percentages, averages, and graphs can be misleading if not understood properly in context. It recommends teaching students to understand numeracy in social studies by asking questions about data in articles and documents, and relating math concepts like averages and scales to real-world examples and issues they are studying.

From UI to UX: Building Ethnographic Praxis in a Usability Engineering CultureSalesforce Engineering
Talk given by Rebecca Buck, Lead UX Researcher at Salesforce, at Praxis Conference 2015 in October.
In this never before shared case study, we explain how our UX research team increased its scope of work from surface-level UI issues to a full portfolio of user-centered research. We use organizational ethnography and organizational change literature to develop a three phase model of research team growth. We then discuss the implications of our model for strengthening ethnographic praxis in cultures dominated by usability engineering. We conclude with a reflection on building internal bridges to facilitate change. Keywords: organizational change, UI, UX, research, ethnography, usability, lean.

A village called Montblanc and a castle atop a mountain. A dragon living nearby was hungry and the villagers offered it animals to eat. When the animals ran out, the villagers decided one of them must be offered by lottery, and it was the princess. The princess cried out for help and Saint George arrived on a horse with a lance and shield to fight the dragon. Saint George defeated the dragon with blows from his lance. From the dragon's blood arose a red rose which Saint George gave to the princess.

1) Colonoscopy reduces colon cancer rates in Lynch syndrome patients by detecting and removing precancerous polyps, but the effectiveness depends on the colonoscopist's adenoma detection rate.
2) The accepted quality marker is an adenoma detection rate above 25% for men and 15% for women. Patients should seek colonoscopists meeting these benchmarks.
3) For Lynch syndrome patients, colonoscopies should include intensive inspection of the right side of the colon and consider chromoendoscopy to aid in visualizing small polyps.
