Atoms are the basic building blocks that make up all matter and consist of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons surrounded by electrons. Atoms can combine to form molecules, and vast numbers of atoms form everything from planets and stars to living things. The number of protons in the nucleus defines the element and each element is given a one-letter symbol.
