Google is testing airborne wireless networks to provide Wi-Fi coverage to Sub-Saharan Africa using high-altitude platforms such as balloons or drones flying between 8-10 kilometers above the ground. The technology for airborne wireless networks has existed since 2000 and uses a control system to manage platforms in the sky to broadcast Wi-Fi signals.
