For the last 14 years I've been living and teaching in international schools around the world. From Munich, Germany to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Bangkok, Thailand, and now Yokohama, Japan, teaching internationally has been an amazing and fantastic adventure. Every country, school and community has taught me something new, and every day I am envious of my students who have grown up in this ever-changing environment. During this presentation, I'll share some of the key highlights (for me) of teaching in international schools. I hope this will encourage you to start your own adventure in a new country too!
Can a crowdsourced geospatial database be considered authoritative? Indeed can any dataset that describes the real world be considered authoritative, whether crowd sourced or “professionally compiled”? Who determines authority? What constitutes authority in geodata? Does authority matter and if it does, why? What actions or processes might contribute to promoting crowdsourced geodata to a position of authority?
I want to consider the nature of authority in geospatial data and whether it might be possible for a crowdsourced dataset such as OpenStreetMap (although these observations could apply to any crowdsourced geodata) to become authoritative or a primary reference source.
Part of a workshop I am presenting with Brian Kelly at ALT-C 2009. My role is to set out a dream of how higher education might be, which I do by means of an extended (and overstretched some might say) fruit-based metaphor.
During NCAIS Innovate 2010 conference attendees were witness to six, five-minute presentations where presenters showcased one of their passion points about education. We call these sessions SPARKING Education. http://innovate.ncais.org
At Yokohama International School we use Google Apps for just about everything from managing shared homework calendars for homeroom groups, to student rubrics for student/parent/teacher feedback, to assignment sheets, and Google Sites to store templates, forms and important documents. This session will share strategies for keeping yourself, students, colleagues and parents organized and running smoothly with the many options that Google Apps for Education provide.

Description: Elevated temperatures in pediatric patients are some of the most common, and often frustrating types of calls in EMS. Are the parents over-reacting? Are we under-reacting? This presentation illuminates what causes fever, how it can help or harm a child, what problems it can cause or be caused by, how to differentiate critical vs benign fever and how to prioritize care in pediatric patients with elevated temperature.

Learning Objectives: Students will learn:
- Normal and abnormal thermoregulation in pediatric patients.
- Obtaining accurate thermometry through a variety of methods.
- Differentiation of exogenous vs endogenous pyrogens.
- Differentiation of “Febrile Seizure” and “Seizure with Fever”
- Special concerns for pediatric fever including patients with sickle cell disease, poor cardiac reserves, poor respiratory function and immune-compromised or immuno-suppressed patients.
