Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Spunaspilkennsla
1.
2. Áður en við byrjum...
• 33 ára íslenskufræðingur með
kennsluréttindi, starfa sem vefstjóri hjá
Ölgerðinni.
• Kenndi í Langholtsskóla og Víkurskóla í 5 ár.
• Hef spilað spunaspil frá 13 ára aldri.
• Hef stjórnað og kennt spunaspil frá 18 ára
aldri.
• Hef notað spunaspil í kennslu.
• Hef verið með valfag þar sem nemendur
fengu að spila heilan vetur.
3. Hlutverkaleikir
• Allir spila eða hafa spilað
hlutverkaleiki
– Lögg‘ og bófó
– Káboj og indjánar
– Mömmuleikir osfrv.
• Börn læra slíka leiki mjög
snemma og prófa sig áfram í
hinum ólíkustu hlutverkum.
• Í daglegu lífi leikum við auk
þess ólík hlutverk.
4. Hlutverkaleikir
(Anna Jeppesen, 1994)
6. Hlutverkaleikir
• Hlutverkaleikir reyna á:
– Ímyndunarafl
– Samskiptatækni
– Samvinnu
– Frjóa hugsun
– Innlifun
– Tungumál
• Hlutverkaleikir bjóða nemendum að:
– Skapa
– Tjá sig
– Leysa vandamál
– Komast í snertingu við ólík sjónarmið, tilfinningar eða skoðanir
– Sjá hluti í víðara samhengi
– Upplifa nýjar aðstæður
7. Hlutverkaleikir
• Teljast til félagslegrar hugsmíðahyggju
• Efla samskipta- og líkams-/hreyfigreind
– Einnig sjálfsþekkingar- og tilfinningagreind
• Markmið hlutverkaleikja er ekki síst að stuðla
að öryggi og hæfni í samskiptum við aðra.
• Með spurningum og athugasemdum getur
kennari hjálpað nemendum til að sjá
aðstæður í nýju ljósi og tengja þær
raunveruleikanum. (Anna Jeppesen, 1994)
8. Spunaspil - Sagan
• Koma fyrst fram sem afsprengi
herkænskuspila.
• Fyrsta spunaspilið var
Dungeon‘s & Dragons, gefið út
1974 af fyrirtækinu TSR.
Höfundar Gary Gygax og Dave
Arneson.
• Fyrsta og eina íslenska
spunaspilið, Askur
Yggdrasill, kom út á 10.
áratugnum.
9. Spunaspil - Sagan
• Varð fljótt svona jaðaráhugamál,
fékk svolítinn cult-status.
• Þótti mjög umdeilt á 9. áratugnum
og voru þó nokkur morð og
sjálfsmorð sögð tilkomin vegna
spunaspila.
– Síðar hefur verið sýnt fram á að svo
var ekki, heldur virðast allar
rannsóknir benda til hins gagnstæða.
• Á 10. áratugnum og byrjun 21. aldar
hafa spunaspil verið rísandi og þó
nokkur vöxtur í fjölda spilara, sem
og spunaspila.
10. Spunaspil – hverjir spila?
• Allt frá upphafi hafa
spunaspilarar taldir vera
nördar.
– Vin Diesel
– Black Sabbath
– Robin Williams
– Mike Myers
– Ben Affleck
– Matt Damon
– Marylin Manson
11. Spunaspil – hverjir spila?
• Áður fyrr voru það nær
eingöngu karlmenn sem
spiluðu.
– Erkitýpan um einmana
nördinn sem var ekki
félagslega sterkur átti vel við
spunaspilara.
– Tækifæri fyrir þá sem ekki
voru félagslega sterkir til að
mynda tengsl og eignast vini.
12. Spunaspil – hverjir spila?
• Mikil sprenging orðið í
kvenkynsspilurum frá
aldamótum.
– Að hluta tilkomið vegna
þess að kerfin eru orðin
kvenlægari.
– Spunaspil er ekki lengur úti
á jaðrinum, heldur sífellt að
öðlast meiri viðurkenningu í
samfélaginu.
13. Hvað eru spunaspil?
• Spunaspil ganga út á spuna innan
markaðra ytri og innri aðstæðna.
– Ytri aðstæður: Kerfi, fjöldi leikmanna,
tími, rými osfrv.
– Innri aðstæður: Heimur, saga,
tímasetning, tækni osfrv.
• Spunaspil er gagnvirk frásagnartækni.
– Allir þátttakendur hafa áhrif á framvindu
sögunnar.
• Markmið þeirra er að skemmta
þátttakendum en um leið fá leikmenn
tækifæri til að leysa ólíkar þrautir sem
stjórnandi leggur fyrir þá í frásögninni.
14. Hvað eru spunaspil?
• Spunaspil skiptast í 3 flokka:
– Blað & Blýantur (Pen&paper)
– LARP (Live-action roleplay)
– RPCG (Roleplaying computer
games)
• Í öllum skiptast þátttakendur
í 2 hlutverk:
– Leikmenn
– Stjórnendur
15. Hvað eru spunaspil?
• Spunaspil notast við reglur, eins og
önnur spil.
– Til eru mörg mismunandi reglusett,
kölluð kerfi.
– Mörg spunaspil notast við teninga
af mismunandi stærðum, allt frá 2
hliða og upp í 100 hliða.
• Hver spilastund tekur jafnan
nokkra klukkutíma
– Spilaðar eru ákveðnar sögur eða
ævintýri.
– Oft tengjast ævintýrin eða sögurnar
sín á milli og mynda risa-ævintýri
(e. Campaign).
16. Hvað eru spunaspil?
• Hver leikmaður tekur að sér hlutverk einnar persónu
eða hetju.
– Persónur eru gerðar eftir þeim reglum sem hvert kerfi eða
spil leggur fyrir spilara.
– Leikmaður setur sig í spor persónunnar og tekur þátt, ásamt
öðrum leikmönnum, að leysa hin ýmsu vandamál og þrautir
sem hvert ævintýri inniheldur.
17. Hvað eru spunaspil?

aukapersónum
– Hann leikur aukapersónur og
andhetjur
– Hann færir fram frásögnina
eftir því sem við á

persónu.
• Óskrifaðar
– Flestir spilahópar koma sér upp
spilastíl, t.d. hvaða daga er
spilað, hve margir í hóp o.s.frv.
