The nonprofit Giraffe Heroes Project was born in the head and heart of Ann Medlock, a freelance editor, publicist, speech writer and writer living in Manhattan. Ann started the Project in 1984 as an antidote to the mind-numbing violence and trivia that pervaded the media, eroding civic energy and hope. People needed to know about the heroes of our times and all that they were accomplishing as courageous, compassionate citizens. Ann's strategy for the Giraffe Heroes Project was simple— she would find unknown heroes, commend them as Giraffes for sticking their necks out, and get their stories told on radio and television and in print. Giraffe stories would show the public that there was headway being made on the problems of the world, that there were individuals who had solutions—and the courage to move into action. The stories would feed people’s souls, inform their attitudes—and get them moving on public problems that mattered to them.
The idea of telling heroes’ stories to inspire others to action has deep roots. People have been telling the stories of heroes for thousands of years as a way to communicate their culture's values. Ann Medlock invented the Giraffe Heroes Project to do the same thing for our times. She knew that stories go straight to the heart and stay there, bypassing the objections that the mind can throw up to keep out theories, rules and admonitions. Ann also knew that the giraffe metaphor and imagery were great ways to get people’s attention, to engage their interest and, once engaged, to get past both their fears and their anti-message radar.

Greener Oconomowoc celebrated Earth Day in 2013, by hosting an Earth Day Bike Summit on Sunday April 21st from 11am to 4pm at the Oconomowoc Arts Center (641 E Forest Street, Oconomowoc, WI 53066).
The Earth Day Bike Summit event was free and open to the public, with a donation to the Oconomowoc Food Pantry. The event showcased educational programs, environmental organizations, biking partners and advocacy groups along with local businesses interested in healthy living. The event hosted a variety of family friendly activities geared towards children and youth as well as a mini alternative vehicle show.
Approximately 500 people attended the event which showcased over 20 + local businesses, not-for-profit environmental organizations and biking advocay groups.
2014 Year in Review
The Atlanta Chapter of AABE had a successful 2014. They held 16 events focused on professional development, community service, and scholarships. Notable events included their 16th annual MLK celebration with Energy Exchange, a women's panel on careers in energy, sending members to the national conference, and awarding 38 scholarships totaling $35,750. The chapter also participated in community outreach through their annual BEAM program and preparing meals with Open Hand Atlanta. Looking ahead, the chapter aims to build on this progress and have another strong year of programming in 2015.

The chapter also participated in community outreach through their annual BEAM program and preparing meals with Open Hand Atlanta. 2016 SMAC Highlights

Community voices and values: Reflecting community perspectives in definitions of program success
Rebecca M. Teasdale presented on how to better incorporate community voices and values into definitions of program success in evaluation. She analyzed evaluation reports and found that while effectiveness was the most common criteria of success, experience, quality, relevance and equity were also used. Criteria were typically drawn from the project, evaluation or literature, but incorporating community and partner perspectives could provide a more nuanced understanding of success. The presentation concluded by emphasizing the importance of consulting communities to identify what is important to them and exploring how projects can be relevant, equitable and have consequences for the community.
