The Merry Cemetery in Săpânța, Romania is famous for its colorful tombstones painted with naïve scenes depicting the lives of those buried there. It diverges from the traditional European view of death as solemn. The cemetery originated from one local artist who began carving epitaphs on wooden crosses in 1935. Now there are over 800 such painted crosses displaying an original and poetic memorialization of the deceased.
