Spearfishing requires specialized equipment like a wetsuit, mask, snorkel, speargun, weightbelt, fins, and knife. It can be done along coastlines from a boat or shore, with good locations including the Sydney Northern Beaches. While legal, spearfishing has guidelines to follow regarding bag limits, protected fish that cannot be speared, and requiring the use of hands for lobsters and crayfish rather than shooting them. Freediving, associated with spearfishing, involves breath-hold diving without scuba equipment and is often done without a speargun as part of the hobby.
