ABSTRACT: Although a significant amount of literature exists on Morocco's migration policies and their
successes and failures since their implementation in 2014, there is limited research on the integration of subSaharan African children into schools. This paperis part of a Ph.D. research project that aims to fill this gap. It
reports the main findings of a study conducted with migrant children enrolled in two public schools in Rabat,
Morocco, exploring how integration is defined by the children themselves and identifying the obstacles that they
have encountered thus far. The following paper uses an inductive approach and primarily focuses on the
relationships of children with their teachers and peers as a key aspect of integration for students with a migration
background. The study has led to several crucial findings. It emphasizes the significance of speaking Colloquial
Moroccan Arabic (Darija) and being part of a community for effective integration. Moreover, it reveals that the
use of Modern Standard Arabic as the language of instruction in schools is a source of frustration for students,
indicating the need for language policy reform. The study underlines the importanceof considering the
children‟s agency when being integrated into mainstream public schools.

Improving Workplace Safety Performance in Malaysian SMEs: The Role of Safety ...AJHSSR Journal
ABSTRACT: In the Malaysian context, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) experience a significant
burden of workplace accidents. A consensus among scholars attributes a substantial portion of these incidents to
human factors, particularly unsafe behaviors. This study, conducted in Malaysia's northern region, specifically
targeted Safety and Health/Human Resource professionals within the manufacturing sector of SMEs. We
gathered a robust dataset comprising 107 responses through a meticulously designed self-administered
questionnaire. Employing advanced partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) techniques
with SmartPLS 3.2.9, we rigorously analyzed the data to scrutinize the intricate relationship between safety
behavior and safety performance. The research findings unequivocally underscore the palpable and
consequential impact of safety behavior variables, namely safety compliance and safety participation, on
improving safety performance indicators such as accidents, injuries, and property damages. These results
strongly validate research hypotheses. Consequently, this study highlights the pivotal significance of cultivating
safety behavior among employees, particularly in resource-constrained SME settings, as an essential step toward
enhancing workplace safety performance.

Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Editor's Notes
Hi I’m Kirby Lindgren from Adoption Learning Partners.
I’m going to talk about how social work meeting social media: the good, the bad and the ugly.
The world has changed. It’s changed a lot even since I was last giving one of these lightening talks about social media.
Here’s a demonstration of change. Raise of hands, how many of you started your day today by reading the morning paper?
How many read that paper every single day?
Now those of you with your hands still up, think about your sons and/or daughters --- Do they read the paper every day?
The truth is that fewer and fewer of us are waiting for the morning paper to find breaking news.
More and more are turning to the net and to social media in particular.
In fact, this visual is quickly becoming an historic relic and reminder of just how much life has moved on from the static to the dynamic.
Many of us (and especially Gen Y) is much more likely to learn about the news this way
We follow people and organizations we care about.
Those people and organizations publish “news” all day long. Answering Twitter’s question: what’s happening right now?
We have access to this news firehose whenever we want. Some may be trivial --- “just had a great bagel this morning!”
Other pieces of “news” are hard hitting “AmTrack derailed in Phildelphia, many dead, many more injured”
It’s all about customizing what you want to see and tuning in whenever you want to see it.
And all at the convenience of your phone.
We’ve come a long way baby!
The mantra of social media is like this Apple slogan -- think different
And if you found yourself pausing with this and wanting, like me, to correct the grammar here adding an “LY” to the adverb, boy you must be tortured by the habits of social media.
As you’ve likely already seen, grammar gets kicked to the curb in social media.
Full sentences --- are you kidding me? We don’t even use full words anymore.
Of course, that can be problematic if you’re not in the know. What the heck do all these random letters stand for anyway?
Afraid to admit you don’t always know? No worries…here’s a quick tutorial.
Let’s make this interactive, too. Just clap along if you know what something means.
Let’s set our clapping gauge by giving us all something easy. LOL No, it’s not Lots of Love --- it’s Laughing out Loud.
Okay, now who’s going to clap for this one ROTFLMAO? Hint: it’s a cousin of LOL. Yes, it’s Rolling on the floor laughing my ass off.
SMH Shake my head is a way to express disgust.
HT Hat tip as a way to praise someone or something
FOMO is very prevalent especially with Gen Y --- Fear of Missing Out
There’s still a place for civility amongst all these acronym-filled world, tho. In fact, social media rules of conduct include nice stuff. Stuff that should make any social work smile. Ready to smile?
Authenticity is key. You need to be coming to social media with the real deal. Nothing phony will fly.
If you’re fake or lying in social media, you WILL be found out and exposed. Mercilessly sometimes.
Receptivity is important, too.
If an organization gets called out of something, they need to LISTEN. Being receptive to the feedback of the crowd in social media is really imporant. Mistakes will be forgiven, but stubornness is scorned.
Transparency is critical in social media, too. If you are sponsoring something, it needs to be clear. Bloggers that have been paid by a company to review a product or attend event acknowledge this freely and clearly.
Enforcement of the rules is crowd sourced --- community policing is the way of social media. Today’s version of a neighborhood watch program.
Here’s another #good aspect of social media. Social is at it’s best when shared.
Steve Mills, Executive VP of IBM has a framed certificate from Kindergarten in his office.
Everything I need to know I learned there. How to Share.
Let’s learn, share, fail and succeed together. Don’t you love how Social Media Dovetails so nicely with the social work field???
Okay, so we’re showing our true selves and listening to feedback and Sharing away, how is it that communication today can go so wrong?
Partly, it’s because short hand can be misunderstood --- quite easily.
Solution: add in emotional context!
When what you have to say is difficult to put into words or can be misunderstood, skip the words – add an emoji!
Emojii’s are everywhere in social media adding emotion without the keystrokes.
They make otherwise ambiguous text clear that you’re
just kidding or
steaming mad
Or being sarcastic
Expressing your ethnicity
Or exasperated beyond words.
The younger you are, the more likely you are to use multiple social media platforms.
16-24 year olds are using, on average, 4.2 social media networks.
They are still on FB, but so are their parents, so….. They needed to find more outlets, of course.
YouTube is popular with teens as is Twitter and Instagram
But what’s that ghost thingee that 37% of them are on?
Show of hands --- how many of you know what the heck this is? Casper??
No, It’s the icon for Snapchat. A recent pew research study revealed that over 40% of teens and over 50% of teen girls, use this social media platform.
Snapchat is a photo messaging app where sappers take photos or videos and add text then send them. These sent photographs and videos are known as "Snaps". Users set a time limit for how long recipients can view their Snaps (as of April 2014, the range is from 1 to 10 seconds), after which they will be hidden from the recipient's device and deleted from Snapchat's servers.
You may think, due to the ephemeral nature of Snapchat messages, its use would be predominantly for privacy-sensitive content including the much talked about potential use for sexual content and sexting.
2014 study by University of Washington found that ONLY 1.6% of snappers reported using Snapchat primarily for sexting, although 14.2% admitted to having sent sexual content via Snapchat at some point.Primary use for Snapchat was found to be for funny content like stupid faces with 59.8% of respondents reporting this use most commonly.
You can’t really talk about social media without talking about smart phones and teens.
Can you imagine growing up in a world where you are connected 24:7? What impact does this have for social skills??? EYE CONTACT ANYONE????
A recent study by Common Sense Media revealed that, despite being avid social media fans, 49% of teens actually prefer to communicate with each other in person. It’s more fun, can better understand what people really mean.33% prefer texting --- because it’s fast and easy. Texting also gives them more time to decide how they want to respond and it’s more private.
45% said they get frustrated with friends for texting or social networking when they are hanging out together
43% wish they could unplug sometimes
36% said “they sometimes wish they could go back to a time when there was no Facebook”
From TechCrunch and Pew Research (April 8, 2015)
First startling stat: access to mobile devices is enabling a nearly quarter (24%) of teens to be online “almost constantly”. Which does rather underline why Actual Teens are so beloved by the tech industry. These eyeballs are oh-so-hungry for content to consume.
As you’d expect, access to mobile devices drives increased teen time online, with the vast majority (94%) of teens who access the Internet on a mobile going online daily or more often.
Both snapchat and instagram are full of selfies. Narcisim everwhere…right?
Seems kinda bad.
But research has identified three reasons people take selfies: self-absorption yes, but also social connection and art.
Showing yourself to others and waiting for their comments or likes can be connecting.
Filters on instagram make any photo look more appealing than what the image actually looks like, let alone what the naked eye would've seen. A modern day self portrait of the artist.
Doesn’t seem so bad when you look at it like that. Does it?
Ready access to social platforms can lead to cyber bullying. This is especially a problem on sites where users are anonymous…..allowing some to spew hate without fear of being called out on it.
Trying to curb this ugliness, Twitter no longer allows users to create anonymous accounts.
Instagram, the social photo sharing site that is very popular with 15-30 crowd, has issued new policies trying to curb bad behavior (and any liablity they might have for aiding and abetting such behavior).
The old was pithy and oh so general.
Post your own stuff.
Don’t be mean.
Keep your clothes on.
The newer version is clearly written by a lawyer and is meant to be policed by both the community and the company. The site is coming of age.
Okay, here’s another quiz. Raise your hand if you’ve ever seen this social media icon?
It’s called Yik Yak. It’s like a hyperlocal, anonymous form of Twitter.
The anonymous nature of the app made it a tool for cyber bullying, especially with high school kids and younger.
This was such a problem that the owners of Yik Yak began geo-fencing high schools so the app wouldn’t work inside the buildings. Today the app is blocked at the majority of high schools around the U.S.
But is still hugely popular on college campuses.
The founders believe that anonymity, when done correctly, can add a lot of value.
Example: A U-M student had posted on Yik Yak they were having thoughts of suicide around exam time, and the community responded by hosting a suicide prevention rally on campus.
“Someone may not have posted that on another form of social media,” said Buffington. “But here they posted that, and the community banded together as a result.”
Does this look familiar?
Mobile phone and smartphone usage is everywhere and it’s changing how we interact with each other.
Nearly 2/3s of all Americans now own a smart phone. For many, it’s a key entry point into the online world.
It’s likely not surprising to you that over 80% of those making over $100k a year own a smart phone.
But what may surprise you is that even those where the household income was less than $50k, 59% of teens had a smart phone.
In fact, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation did a study last year and found that even in developing countries, mobile connectedness was critical to life. Even people living on less than $2 a day reported owning a mobile phone --- cutting back on food purchases if necessary.
The total cost of ownership of mobile phone usage is falling and poor people increasingly view mobile phones as a necessity rather than a luxury.
And what are people looking at on their phones?
Let’s chat for bit about this social media giant. Over 70% of online adults in this country have a facebook account.
Wow. FACEBOOK IS REALLY LIKED!
But, is it really?
A new study from the journal of clinical psychology associated Facebook usage with depression. The more time respondents spent on FB, the more likely they were to report depressive symptoms.
The mediating factor is a well-established psychological phenomenon of Social Comparison
Making comparisons between our most humdrum moments and our friends “highlight reels” --- vacation montages from Tuscany and adorable, blissful baby pics
Maybe time to cut down on FB or at least adjust our attitude towards it.
Remember, not everything but the highlight reel moments were put into that holiday letter --- same goes with facebook posts.
A 2015 Pew Research study also showed an increase among a certain subgroup of FB users who were susceptible to what’s labeled “the cost of caring”.
They were mostly women and they felt increased levels of stress after spending time on facebook because they were increasingly aware of stressful events in others’ lives. As we all know, stress is contagious. When a friend (or even an acquaintance) shares that they lost their job or was dumped by their partner or just received a cancer diagnosis, you can feel stressed out.
And social media is increasingly a place where news of all kinds are shared. So….. Some of us will be feeling those effects, even when all we wanted to do was scroll through the feed for a few minutes and look for kittens playing the piano.
There’s always a theme in social media. Here’s a breakdown by day:
#mondayMotivation: Inspiration to get you over being tired from the weekend and bogged down with a bulging inbox
#transformationtuesday: devoted to personal development. inspirational quotes or ideas for betterment
#wellnesswednesday is a close cousin to transformationtuesday but is more clearly focused on health and wellness. promoting healthy living products and conversations
#tbt Throw back Thursday is time to dig out your grade school photos or share a slice of your company history.
#followfriday encourages users to follow others and explore new interests. You can use this to spread the word about a new partner agency or initiative.
#Caturday is a transparent way to share what marketers know people love to see: silly cat pictures!
#SelfieSunday encourages sharing photos of what’s happening in your world. SELFIES anyone???
So, what’s ahead?
Customization and ease of connection and sharing are clear trends.
Facebook introduced a scrapbook feature that allows parents to create a space for their child on facebook and begin tagging them in pictures they upload to FB. Parents can then hand off the scrapbook to the child once they turn 13, the legal age for FB.
They are also going to add a subscribe feature that will let loved ones like grandparents get a notification any time a photo is added to a kid’s scrapbook.
Folks at FB are no fools. They know they always need to focus on the next group of users in order to keep growing.
So they are targeting not just the woman holding the smart phone.
They’re targeting the newborn, too.
