Urban Life behind the mask: Impostura, realidad y relato en la proyección global del Nuevo Poder Urbano.
Presentación para la Masterclass DIRCOM en EIC, Escuela Internacional de Comunicación (Madrid / Junio de 2016)
Por Pablo Sánchez Chillón Abogado. Urban Affairs y Directo de GlobalGOV + Foro Global Territorio
In recent years, the Smart City has become a very popular concept amongst policymakers
and urban planners. However, at the same time as new urban Smart interventions are being designed and applied, insufficient attention has been paid to how these strategies are inserted into the wider political economy and, in particular, the political ecology of urban transformation.
Therefore, in this presentation the authors (Hug March and Ramon Ribera-Fumaz) critically explore the implementation of the Smart City, tracing how the “environment” and environmental concerns have become an organising principle in Barcelona’s Smart City strategy. Through an urban political ecology prism they aim to critically reflect upon the contradictions of the currently existing Smart City in Barcelona and
how Smart discourses and practices might be intentionally or unintentionally mobilised in
ways that serve to depoliticise urban redevelopment and environmental management. The
presentation stresses the need to repoliticize the debates on the Smart City and put citizens back at the centre of the urban debate.

City Games: Up and Down and Sideways on the Ladder of AbstractionSebastian Deterding
Like games and everyday life, games and cities have been intersecting in two primary ways: modelling the city in an abstract view from above, with planning games and urban simulations, and transforming people's everyday urban experiences and behaviors with playful interventions on the ground. Neither one, this talk argues, has been particularly successful in creating lasting improvements in citizen's well being. To accomplish this, we need to take game design seriously and look sideways at the messy middle between map and territory, the processes in which one is translated into the other (or not). My keynote at ISAGA 2017 in Delft, NL, July 10, 2017.

How can architects and planners help to create cities fit for the future? This presentation, created for the international conference on Cities, People and Places organised by the University of Moratuwa in Sri Lanka in October 2013, argues that people-centred policies that encourage sociability and civic participation are needed in response to global issues such as climate change and urbanisation.
CSI.SP: Informal Sao Paulo by Jaap Klaarenbeek (18 Feb 2009)Jasper Moelker
‘Informal Practices’ will be the central theme of Jaap Klaarenbeek’s lecture on the 18th. Various instances of informality will be showed, the ‘magnitude’ of informality in São Paulo and the way it effects the city’s urban life and space. During the lecture several types and modes of informality will be distinghuished, as well as the way in which these practices emerged in São Paulo’s urban landscape, and the forms in which they use the urban space. In his lecture Jaap will shed a light on the tensions between formal and informal and the complex typologies they produce, as well as the symmetries and asymmetries between formal and informal ‘worlds’ in São Paulo. Jaap Klaarenbeek is graduating on an investigation on the topic of informality in São Paulo.
