composition of various institutions, markets, regulatory bodies. The performance of financial
system of any country depends on the performance of financial markets. This report discusses the

Indian securities market. Following the online share trading trends are discussed and also
investors’ behaviour, attitude and decision making are presented in this chapter.

The securities market is a major component of the capital market, dominated by industrial
securities. The market where securities are traded known as Securities market. It consists of two
different segments namely primary and secondary market. The primary market deals with new or
fresh issue of securities it also known as new issue market whereas the secondary market
provides a place for purchase and sale of existing securities and is often termed as stock market
or stock exchange.
The secondary market deals with all types of securities. The secondary market is known
as stock market or stock exchange an provides a place for regular sale and purchase of different
types of securities like shares, debentures, bonds & government securities and is an organised
market where all transactions are regulated by the rules and laws of the concerned stock
exchanges in India. Presently, there are 23 stock exchanges in India including BSE, NSE. The
Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) registered as 582 stock broking company in India

which enjoy nation-wide coverage and handle most of the business in securities in the country.
From the population over one billion, barely 18 million investing in equity markets, According to
SEBI data, 10 cities contributed over 80% of trading volume in 2016.
5. The organised security market in India is a comparatively recent development. In the year 1933, only
three cities namely Bombay, Calcutta and Ahmedabad in India had Stock Exchanges.
NATIONAL STOCK EXCHANGE
The National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE) is a
Mumbai-based stock exchange. It is the largest stock
exchange in India and the third largest in the world in
terms of volume of transactions.
NSE is mutually-owned by a set of leading financial
institutions, banks, insurance companies and other
financial intermediaries in India but its ownership and
management operate as separate entities.
In March 2016, the NSE had a total market capitalization
of US$ 1.41 trillion making it the second-largest stock
market in South Asia in terms of market-capitalization.
BOMBAY STOCK EXCHANGE
The Bombay Stock Exchange Limited (Marathi)
(formerly, The Stock Exchange, Mumbai; popularly
called The Bombay Stock Exchange, or BSE) is the
oldest stock exchange in Asia. It is located at Dalal
Street, Mumbai, India.
The Bombay Stock Exchange was established in 1875.
There are around 3,500 Indian companies listed with
the stock exchange, and has a significant trading
volume. At October 2016, the market capitalization of
the BSE was about Rs. 33.4 trillion (US $ 730 billion).
The BSE SENSEX (SENSITIVE INDEX), also called
the "BSE 30", is a widely used market index in India
and Asia. As of 2016, it is among the 2nd biggest stock
exchanges in the world in terms of transactions
volume.
6. WHAT IS STOCK ?
"Stock Market" is a term that is used to refer both to
the physical location for buying and selling stocks,
and to the overall activity of the market within a
certain country. When you hear "The stock market was
down today," it refers to the combined activity of
many stock exchanges.
The correct term for the physical location for
trading stocks is the "Stock Exchange." A country may
have many different stock exchanges. Usually a
particular company's stocks are traded on only 1
exchange.
WHY DO INVESTORS BUY STOCKS ?
Generally, investors buy stocks because they believe that
the company will continue to grow - and thus the value of
the stock will rise too.
Buying the stocks of already
well-known companies is relatively safe, but investors
who acquire stock in a new company are facing a much
more substantial risk. but they have much more to gain
too. For instance, those people who bought Microsoft
shares in the 80s and kept them for a long time saw an
exponential rise in their value - something most investors
only dream of.
