Editor's Notes

  • #2 Tonight we are going to talk about the GROW Model and SMART Goals….
  • #3 In addition to supporting an end goal with a performance goal, the goals need to be SMART, PURE and CLEAR…
  • #4 S – Specific – state exactly what the goal is…not round about, or maybes M – Measureable – can the goal be measured – lose 100 lbs, walk 5 miles, become debt free, etc. A – Agreed – everyone involved is in agreement R – Realistic – is this goal realistic, if not there is no hope of meeting the goal T – Time phased – there must be a time limit on the goal, otherwise we are forever seeking and never finding   P – Positively stated: a goal cannot be stated in the negative, that is defeative from the start U – Understood: should be understood and clear R – Relevant: should be relevant to the solution E – Ethical: everything we do as Christians should be ethically sound, after all our integrity is at stake   C – Challenging: you must work for anything worth having L – Legal: again our integrity is at stake E – Environmentally Sound: as Christians we are to be good stewards over everything intrusted to us, environment included A – Appropriate: R – Recorded: write down your goal….just as we write a vision, we must write down what we are looking to achive….make it plain
  • #5 Everyone in here should have a dream….when you know that dream you can set your goal, determine your performance goals to get to that end goal, and begin the process (determine your options, when, where, who and do you have the will to follow it through)….   House of Cards….   Approaches to coaching:   When we are coaching we want to see transformation…it is not up to the coach to solve a problem, but to help guide the coachee to reach the goal….   Counselors – listen and offer solutions   Mentors – offer wisdom, experience   Coaches – listen, guide, and step away….
  • #6 So how do you coach without giving advice, or without giving the solution? Leading questions, listening….listening is an extremely important activity…I don’t want to get into listening too much today since you will be covering it in depth next week…but I cannot express how important true listening is. We all hear, but do we listen?   The questions we ask as coaches are also important….One thing I always tell people who are trying to sell me something (such as office equipment, etc.) is that you must know the industry you are trying to sell to…as coaches sometimes we don’t always know the industry, so how do we know the questions to ask? By listening to what the coachee is telling us….Ask how they feel about certain circumstances, task, job requirements, how would the family feel. Find out what the persons values, goals and dreams are…how else can you help them achieve a goal if you don’t get to know them. Learn their story, who they are….You must earn their trust by telling them your story, your dreams, etc. Don’t be afraid to share and be transparent with them….
