The Korean War was a conflict between North Korea, supported by China and the Soviet Union, and South Korea, supported by the United Nations Command led by the United States. As tensions escalated between the USSR and USA in their competition for global influence following World War II, the UN and NATO intervened in the Korean conflict on the side of South Korea. Though devastating, the war ended in an armistice that divided the Korean Peninsula along the original border.
