College students experience high levels of sleep deprivation, averaging only 6.8 hours of sleep per night when 8 or more is recommended. Stress from academics, homework, and social activities are the main causes of lack of sleep for this group. Studies have shown sleep deprivation impairs physical and mental health as well as academic performance, with students who get less sleep having lower GPAs. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule, exercising, avoiding screens before bed, and reducing stress and caffeine can help combat sleep deprivation.
