4. • Slavery existed as early as 7th century B.C in Greece
predominantly in Sparta and Athens.
• Slaves working as miners suffered the worst as they
were treated poorly by their owners.
• In Rome(2nd century B.C), slaves fought as
gladiators.
• Few lucky ones worked in the field of banking and
commerce. Some were even in the military.

5. • People captured in wars were treated poorly as
slaves.
• The Byzantine-Ottoman wars and the Ottoman wars
in Europe resulted in large numbers of Christian
slaves.

6. • Many common Africans were
captured during raids by
African and European gangs.

be exchanged for goods
such as muskets, cloth and
alcohol.
• Even children worked as
slaves.

8. • Slavery in America began when the first African slaves
were brought in 1619, to aid in the production of
tobacco.
• African-American slaves helped build the economic
foundations of the new nation (Owning of more slaves
increased economic status)
• The invention of the cotton gin in 1793 required more
labourers. Thus, the requirement of slaves increased.

9. • Slaves were sometimes traded for other goods in huge
numbers. These were known as slave trades. A few are :
1. Atlantic Slave Trade
• West African states, already involved in slave trading, supplied the
Europeans with African slaves for export across the Atlantic. About
12 lakh slaves were transported.
• The Europeans wanted African slaves as they were inexpensive
and believed to live longer than others (as they were more
immune to Tropical and "Old World" diseases).

• Slaves were sold in European colonies which were in Brazil and

12. • James brown a black leader wanted to unite all the
blacks at Harpers Berry but no slave turned up. He
was captured by the U.S army and hanged.
• Born a slave, Harriett Tubman became a famous
‘conductor’ on the Underground Railroad, leading
hundreds of slaves to freedom.
• A few slaves escaped along with their owners and
crossed the slave line(36°N- Slavery was not
practiced above this line) and claimed freedom but
court went against this by saying “Slaves were only
property”.
• 10-year-old African slave renamed as Priscilla left a
paper trail which connects her to living descendants.

14. • Ashoka in the 3rd century B.C abolished slave trade in the
Mauryan empire(covered almost entire present day
India).
• In the United Kingdom - Slavery Abolition Act 1833 was
passed which deemed slavery an illegal offence.
• The last country which practiced was Mauritania. It was
criminally banned only as late as 2007.

15. • Abolishment of slavery is thanks to the American civil
war, a fight between the north and south states(USA),
under the guidance of Abraham Lincoln.
• The south(confederacy) supported slaves while the
north(union) wanted slavery abolished.
• President Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation,
declaring that all slaves would be set free.
• But, it was with the passing of the 13th amendment that it
was formally abolished.
