Shirakawa go is a historic Japanese village located in a valley along the Shogawa river that has been designated as a UNESCO world heritage site since 1995. The thatched houses in the village were built in a distinctive "praying hands" style to withstand heavy snow in winter and prevent fires, and traditionally housed large multi-generational families who worked in various trades like silkworm breeding and gunpowder production.
