There wasa boy.There wasalwaysa boy,wasn’tthere?Certainlyhe hadalwaysbeenhimself;aboy,
there was no questionaboutthat.She saw him, and she wantedhim.
That is,she observedhim.She became aware of him, andknew thatshe wishedtohave him.She
had notalwaysbeenherself;agirl.She had lapsedintoexistencesimplytohave the boy,andas such
poseda rathersignificantproblemforthe continuationof reality.Simplylapsingasshe hadfrom
nothinghoodintopersonhoodwasnot,initself,sotroubling,butthe mechanism...
She had seenhim,andknewshe wantedhim.Thatwas,she,whowas notyet a she,noran it, nor a
they.Theyhadseenhim;ithad seenhim;everythingandall of it hadseenhim, andknew that all of
it; everything;they;it;she wantedhim.She hadseenhimeyelessly,knew thisinthe mindshe did
not have,knewitwithknowledge she didnotpossess,wantedhimasthe girl she hadnot yetbeen.
Andhad simply,become.
I shouldlike tosaythe universe probablyfeltsomethinglike abirthhappenfromitsgeneral self,but
mostlikelyithadbeenmore like aratherconstrictive bowel movement.Like hearingnailson
chalkboard,orhittingyourfunnybone,onlyona cosmicscale.Cosmicdissonance,if youwill.If one
was to considerthe processfroma technical perspective,one mightacceptthe ideathatsome
small,infinitesimal spriteorquantumparticle of existence hadachievedpersonness,buteventhat
may be grantingit more elegance andsense thanitdeserves.Once she was,she feltnoshame for
such a dastardlydisregardforall the lawsof thermodynamicsandlogic,andsimplysetuponthe

it.His retinaandcerebral cortex wentona veryspecifickind of astrike,andlefthimthe image of a
lensflare asa screensaver.
“Hullo,”she said.She wasrather pleasedwithit,ithavingbeenthe firstthingshe hadeverhad
cause to say.
“Hullo,”he repliedratherunoriginally,havingusedthatwordinabundance duringhisincumbency
as existingpeople.
She steppedforwardandembracedhim, liberatedfromthe knowledge of social etiquette.Itwas
entirelylikelythathe hadthe optionof refusingherembrace,butif youreallythinkaboutit,when
the veryspark of quantumexistence hugsyou,youletit.Butbeingwrappedinthe armsof a
physical,breathingimpossibilityisnomore comfortable forthe objectof thathug thanit isfor the
universe thatbore it,andhe couldhave swornhe was the inside of a star for a moment.Itwas
uncomfortable.Itwaswonderful.Assomethingthathadalwaysbeenandhadhad the benefitof
staidsentience,tobe takenwhollybythe fire andenergyof a sunand spreadout overall of
everythingforevenabrief momentwasecstasis.
Withher arms still aroundhim,she liftedherheadtodirectherfirsteversmile athisface,planteda
trulynovel kissonhisderivative lips,andpromptlyceasedtobe.Noone wasmore surprisedthan
she was,I assure you (withthe possibleexceptionof him).Butashermissive forbeinghadbeen
fulfilledsogloriously,whateverforce hadallowedrealitytoinclude herinithadrescindeditself.The
universe likelyfeltthe same kindof inexpressible relief andunmentionablesatisfactionyou orImay
acknowledge ex postofactoconstipation.She quite reasonablyfeltnothing,beingasshe wasno
longera she.He feltslightlyconfusedandsun-strokedforseveral reasons,andalsoslightlypeckish
as it hadgone half one.
Whetheryoucouldobjectivelyconfirmordenythatthe brief state of affairsdescribedhereinhad
actuallyhappenedinthe same waythatlunchlaterdidis tricky.Certainlysuchathinghad never
happenedbeforethatmoment,andasfar as we know has not happenedsince.Nor are we quite
solidonthe whyfore of the wantingshe,it,they,hadexperiencedsonotly,because foractual,
humanobservationthe boyseemsasplainandunencumberedbygreatnessasany.Perhapsshe
knewsomethingwe don’t.
