1. Who’s The Hero Now? Through out the story, Bob was influenced a lot by Shane. Shane is a broad, powerful, strong, big hearted character. Bob looked up to Shane more than he looked up to his father. He has a strong bond with each and every one of the Starretts in a different way, but especially Bob. There were many scenes where Shane did or said something to Bob that influenced him. Three of those scenes were, when Shane teaches Bob all about guns, when Shane fights Chris, and when There were many scenes where Shane did or said something to Bob that influenced him. One was when Bob had found out that Shane carried a gunman, but he hadn’t mentioned it to anyone. One day Shane sees Bob shooting a gun and gives him some tips and lessons on how to hold and aim a gun. Shane takes his play gun and twirls it around, pretending to pull it out the right way, demonstrating that he knows guns very well. Bob practices with the gun just until he gets it right, and he never forgets how well Shane handled it. This influenced Bob because he saw how much Shane knew about guns and he wanted to know exactly the same Shane did. Shane says “A gun is a tool, Marion, like a shovel, an ax, anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it.” This means that if a man carries a gun, it represents his manhood and how powerful he can be. There were many scenes where Shane did or said something to Bob that influenced him. Another one was when Shane got into a bar fight with one of Fletcher’s men, Chris. The fight was triggered because Shane was in the bar one day and Chris started making comments about how farmers smell like pigs and only drink soda pop. Shane replied, “tell Fletcher to send a grown-up man next time.
The next day, Fletcher and his men start talking about Shane & Joe. Shane does not care what anyone thinks of him, but Shane does care what they think about Joe. Then the fight occurred. Shane went back to the bar and ordered two bottles of soda. He gave one to Chris and invited him to have a drink. Chris threw the bottle at Shane, starting the fight. It ended up that Shane broke Chris’ arm. Bob see’s this fight and asks Shane to teach him how to beat someone like Chris. Shane responds, “A man can keep his self respect without having to cram it down another man's throat.” Seeing this fight influenced Bob because he knows what it’s like to see two grown men fight. He wants to be like Shane when it comes to fighting and be strong like him.
