Shadowplay Media was established in 2011 by Philip E James, following
on from a successful 20 year career as a photographer and film producer.
Phil James Photography (PJP) as it was previously known, developed its
offering with the addition of film production and retouching,progressively
becoming more than simply Phil James Photography. The company was
then rebranded as Shadowplay and is now a successful image production
company with an offering that continues to enhance it’s offering.

Following the rebrand in 2011, Shadowplay grew significantly in the
retouching and 3D imagery fields, and won a number of larger photographic
commissions including projects with Carlsberg, Shell, Heathrow Express,
Albert Bartlett Potatoes (Scotty Brand) plus continuing to work with long
standing clients such as McLaren on a much larger scale. Our growth
came quickly with an expanded team meaning we were able to take on
much larger full production projects. Since then we have been successful
in shooting and creating imagery to support campaigns for Sky, Rolls-
Royce, Shell Oils, Hotpoint and many more exciting brands.All the while,
continuing our own internal research and development projects and
continuing to explore collaborations with other companies.

Our ‘Real World’ knowledge has transferred perfectly to the ‘virtual studio’
we work within to create 3D objects and worlds. CGI has changed the face
of advertising.The lines have been blurred between reality and virtual and they
have opened up amazing possibilities. Cars can be generated on screen rather
than spending immeasurable amounts of getting the car to the location, organic
objects can grow naturally from your screen and wild animals can walk down a
crowded city street.
We can animate, rotate, and explode to reveal unexplorable details or USP’s.
CG still images can be generated for print while animations of the same image
can provide ‘motion adverts’ to support cross platform campaigns. Providing
consistency of style and brand across all media.

We were approached by Gyro London to create a beautiful new CGI
train to help relaunch the Heathrow Express brand. The brief called to
create a high-end automotive feel, with dark lighting and photo real
rendering. We used a mixture of blue prints and product imagery to
create the train from scratch.We not only created some beautiful still
renders for print, but a simple but stunning animated train for online
banners and at Heathrow terminals.

Shadowplay has worked extensively with agency BOS: and Hotpoint on
producing photo-realistic renders of small domestic appliances that
Hotpoint have taken to market. As they launched into a crowded market
Hotpoint needed a design to their packaging that would allow them to
stand out and look desirable.
We helped develop that style and set a tone to move the brand
forward. The beauty of using CGI renders has enabled pipelines in
production to be sped up, meaning from CAD data, using a range of
predetermined textures and combined with a consistent lighting style,
the packaging has been created whilst the product is being
manufactured.

Our client Bowlines Communications had been working with BNP Paribas
Leasing Solutions on conceptualising their strapline for growth,presenting
a few ideas with this concept being their favourite but potentially most
complex.
We jumped at the challenge to create an organic ecosystem of the Bonsai
tree and our resident CGI wizard reimagined the scamp from
Bowline Communications and built the model from scratch. Throw in
some small finishing touches in post and after some tinkering we had
a miniature ecosystem living upon a CGI Bonsai. A perfect visual to
instil the idea of ‘Growth Reimagined’ for BNP Paribas.

Our retouchers collaborate with our photographers and CGI artists using
the raw elements to create a stunning final image. Retouching allows you
to pull together a wealth of assets that could never be captured in one
shot. It gives you the freedom to explore outside of the single moment

Retouching offers an expansion of the creative possibilities to image
making. From simple colour grading to major overhauls of a raw image,
to multi part compositions requiring cut-outs and compositing into other
scenes – be it existing photography,or bespoke created CGI renders.Our

Working closely with McLaren for over 7 years, we shoot their yearly
merchandise and product shoots using their main drivers and a selection
of beautiful models. Ranging from different concepts each year, we have
shot across the world including Barcelona,Jerez racing track and of course
the inspirational Lord Foster designed McLaren UK headquarters.
Regularly limited with timings,we create a studio environment on location
to photograph the drivers, then we capture backplate images and bring all
the shots together in post.This gives our client the optimum amount of
imagery for each of the product ranges,and allows the drivers to get back
to their love of driving these awesome cars.

One of our most exciting and last minute shoots; we had the pleasure of
working directly with the inspiring team at Rolls-Royce in Goodwood. The
brief was to capture the legacy and beauty of a final range of inspirational
cars - the Phantom Zenith Collection.
Photographing through the night, the team used helium balloon and
conventional HMI lighting sources. Shot on the manufacturing plant
floor, we created these images highlighting the key features of these
magnificent cars. Alongside this, we also captured moving image content
as an extra for social media use.

Capturing the vibrancy of the Pukka brand and the energy that the
company evokes was our challenge on this stills project. Working
closely with their brand agency, we analysed their imagery
requirements from a marketing perspective, and created a tiered
approach for their advertising image needs.
We devised a concept to shoot beautiful, evocative
overhead photography of each of their packs. Using vibrant props,
ingredients and lighting that evoked a sunlit day, our stylists and
photographer captured each of their teas and supplements with
complementary set ups and taking into account their‘families’ of products
with colour aspects. We have also continued to work alongside them
in retouching translated packs, and capturing on white pack shots for
their website.

Film content is one of the most powerful ways you can engage with your
clients and create a lasting connection. We use a strategic approach to
film production, we find out what our clients are trying to achieve and by
complementing their brand and communicating their culture, we can set
clear objectives and create a film that looks amazing and gets results.
State of the art equipment in-house ensures production has longevity in
its quality and its appearance is always at its best. At the heart of every
film is a solid story told with passion and imagination, so if you’re good at
what you do and are passionate about it, then tell the world through the
medium of film.
A great project to illustrate such bold claims is our recent collaboration
with the team at Colossal. A truly inspirational group of creatives who
hand paint huge outdoor advertising murals, predominantly in New York
but also worldwide. We produced for the guys a series of custom short
films to showcase across their social media platforms. Tailoring each film
to fit each platform. Truly the modern Michelangelo’s of our day.

A natural progression in the world of 3D and CGI imagery has led us
into the powerful new technology of virtual and augmented reality. We
understand that the world of content creation occasionally requires the
move to fully immersive mediums, creating experiences for brands and
businesses to engage with their customers at a truly interactive level.
Virtual reality is something you experience and is unique in the fact that
it is not passive media consumption.
All creative industries will soon be adopting VR due to its endless
possibilities.The medium opens doors which previously have never been
unlocked - the simple yet incredible experience to be able to draw in a 3D
environment offers a simple yet brilliant example of the new experiences
that can be had. All this allows brands to take their customers on a
journey to a place where visual and audio elements bring their brand
experiences to life.
Using our CGI background, we can build environments from scratch
and create moving image content to meet any conceptual brief our
clients require. Combining film and CGI to create a mixed reality allows
us to create immersive VR surroundings which take image making and

  • 3. T H E B E G I N N I N G Shadowplay Media was established in 2011 by Philip E James, following on from a successful 20 year career as a photographer and film producer. Phil James Photography (PJP) as it was previously known, developed its offering with the addition of film production and retouching,progressively becoming more than simply Phil James Photography. The company was then rebranded as Shadowplay and is now a successful image production company with an offering that continues to enhance it’s offering. T H E R E B R A N D Following the rebrand in 2011, Shadowplay grew significantly in the retouching and 3D imagery fields, and won a number of larger photographic commissions including projects with Carlsberg, Shell, Heathrow Express, Albert Bartlett Potatoes (Scotty Brand) plus continuing to work with long standing clients such as McLaren on a much larger scale. Our growth came quickly with an expanded team meaning we were able to take on much larger full production projects. Since then we have been successful in shooting and creating imagery to support campaigns for Sky, Rolls- Royce, Shell Oils, Hotpoint and many more exciting brands.All the while, continuing our own internal research and development projects and continuing to explore collaborations with other companies.   • 8. C G I Our ‘Real World’ knowledge has transferred perfectly to the ‘virtual studio’ we work within to create 3D objects and worlds. CGI has changed the face of advertising.The lines have been blurred between reality and virtual and they have opened up amazing possibilities. Cars can be generated on screen rather than spending immeasurable amounts of getting the car to the location, organic objects can grow naturally from your screen and wild animals can walk down a crowded city street. We can animate, rotate, and explode to reveal unexplorable details or USP’s. CG still images can be generated for print while animations of the same image can provide ‘motion adverts’ to support cross platform campaigns.   • 9. H E AT H RO W E X P R E S S We were approached by Gyro London to create a beautiful new CGI train to help relaunch the Heathrow Express brand. The brief called to create a high-end automotive feel, with dark lighting and photo real rendering. We used a mixture of blue prints and product imagery to create the train from scratch.We not only created some beautiful still renders for print, but a simple but stunning animated train for online banners and at Heathrow terminals. TIMELINE 4 weeks USAGE Animation on billboard throughout Heathrow, still renders used across all advertising from print to digital. H O T P O I N T: I N D E S I T    Shadowplay has worked extensively with agency BOS: and Hotpoint on producing photo-realistic renders of small domestic appliances that Hotpoint have taken to market. As they launched into a crowded market Hotpoint needed a design to their packaging that would allow them to stand out and look desirable. We helped develop that style and set a tone to move the brand forward. The beauty of using CGI renders has enabled pipelines in production to be sped up, meaning from CAD data, using a range of predetermined textures and combined with a consistent lighting style, the packaging has been created whilst the product is being manufactured. B N P PA R I B A S    Our client Bowlines Communications had been working with BNP Paribas Leasing Solutions on conceptualising their strapline for growth,presenting a few ideas with this concept being their favourite but potentially most complex. We jumped at the challenge to create an organic ecosystem of the Bonsai tree and our resident CGI wizard reimagined the scamp from Bowline Communications and built the model from scratch. Throw in some small finishing touches in post and after some tinkering we had a miniature ecosystem living upon a CGI Bonsai. A perfect visual to instil the idea of ‘Growth Reimagined’ for BNP Paribas. TIMELINE 1 week USAGE Brochure and print use, with creation for future proof additional animation use.   • 17. M C L A R E N Working closely with McLaren for over 7 years, we shoot their yearly merchandise and product shoots using their main drivers and a selection of beautiful models. Ranging from different concepts each year, we have shot across the world including Barcelona,Jerez racing track and of course the inspirational Lord Foster designed McLaren UK headquarters. Regularly limited with timings,we create a studio environment on location to photograph the drivers, then we capture backplate images and bring all the shots together in post.This gives our client the optimum amount of imagery for each of the product ranges,and allows the drivers to get back to their love of driving these awesome cars. RO L L S - ROYC E Z E N I T H One of our most exciting and last minute shoots; we had the pleasure of working directly with the inspiring team at Rolls-Royce in Goodwood. The brief was to capture the legacy and beauty of a final range of inspirational cars - the Phantom Zenith Collection. Photographing through the night, the team used helium balloon and conventional HMI lighting sources. Shot on the manufacturing plant floor, we created these images highlighting the key features of these magnificent cars. Alongside this, we also captured moving image content as an extra for social media use. TIMELINE 3 overnight shoot days plus retouchin (handled by Rolls-Royce.   • 20. P U K K A T E A      Capturing the vibrancy of the Pukka brand and the energy that the company evokes was our challenge on this stills project. Working closely with their brand agency, we analysed their imagery requirements from a marketing perspective, and created a tiered approach for their advertising image needs. We devised a concept to shoot beautiful, evocative overhead photography of each of their packs. Using vibrant props, ingredients and lighting that evoked a sunlit day, our stylists and photographer captured each of their teas and supplements with complementary set ups and taking into account their‘families’ of products with colour aspects. We have also continued to work alongside them in retouching translated packs, and capturing on white pack shots for their website.
