Wireless sensor and actor networks (WSANs) can be used for monitoring physical environments and acting according to the observations. In order to differentiate the actions based on the sensed information, WSANs comprise of various applications with different quality of service (QoS) requirements. QoS solutions for WSANs are challenging compared to traditional networks because of the limited resource capabilities of sensor nodes. In terms of QoS requirements, WSANs also differ from WSNs since actors and sensors have distinct resource constraints. In this paper we present LRP-QS, lightweight routing protocol with QoS support for WSANs. Our protocol provides QoS by differentiating the rates among different types of applications with dynamic packet tagging at the sensor nodes and per flow management at the actor nodes. Through extensive simulations we observe a greater packet delivery ratio and a better memory consumption rate in comparison with the related mechanisms.

In distributed SDN architectures, the network is controlled by a cluster of multiple controllers. This distributed ap- proach permits to meet the scalability and reliability requirements of large operational networks. Despite that, a logical centralized view of the network state should be guaranteed, enabling the simple development of network applications. Achieving a consis- tent network state requires a consensus protocol, which generates control traffic among the controllers whose timely delivery is crucial for network performance. We focus on the state-of-art ONOS controller, designed to scale to large networks, based on a cluster of self-coordinating controllers, and concentrate on the inter-controller control traffic. Based on real traffic measurements, we develop a model to quan- tify the traffic exchanged among the controllers, which depends on the topology of the controlled network. This model is useful to design and dimension the control network interconnecting the controllers.

We consider a distributed Software Defined Net- working (SDN) architecture adopting a cluster of multiple controllers to improve network performance and reliability. Differently from previous work, we focus on the control traffic exchanged among the controllers, in addition to the Openflow control traffic exchanged between controllers and switches. We develop an analytical model to estimate the reaction time per- ceived at the switches due to the inter-controller communications, based on the data-ownership model adopted in the cluster. We advocate a careful placement of the controllers, taking into account the two above kinds of control traffic. We evaluate, for some real ISP network topologies, the possible delay tradeoffs for the controllers placement problem.

ChorusOS is a microkernel real-time operating system designed as a message-based computational model. ChorusOS started as the Chorus distributed real-time operating system research project at Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique (INRIA) in France in 1979. During the 1980s, Chorus was one of two earliest microkernels (the other being Mach) and was developed commercially by Chorus Systèmes. Over time, development effort shifted away from distribution aspects to real-time for embedded systems.
