During a seminar on nanotechnology, Ms. Jaritza Gómez discussed the benefits of internships and her experiences working in a laboratory. She talked about conducting research on glass and creating very stable, high density aged glasses that crystalize over time in her laboratory. The seminar also included a presentation by Dr. Andy Greenberg on nanoscience and nanotechnology, which is the study and application of small materials across various fields of science and engineering. Nanotechnology can be used to improve quality of life.

Seminar: Nanotechnology
Speakers: Dr. Andy Greenberg and Ms. Jaritza Gómez
February 21, 2012
During the seminar Ms. Gómez talked about, how a summer internship doing research
can help us in our future. After that she gave advice on what to expect on internships
and during a job at a laboratory. It was very helpful to hear her actual mistakes and
experiences because it motivated us. She told us about some of the topics in which
she has worked on during her undergraduate studies. At the moment she works with
glass on her investigations. They make very glassesthat are vey stable and have high
density. I learned that if you let a glass aging, it crystalizes and is called an aged glass.
In Ms. Gómez laboratory they make this kind of glasses for their research.
Nanoscience and nanotechnology are the study and application of extremely small
things and can be used across all the other science fields, such as chemistry, biology,
physics, materials science, and engineering. (National Nanotechnology Initiative) We
should support scientific investigations because they help us improve our quality of
life.
