• Characters
1)Mary lennox
-Initially Mary was a ill-tempered, ugly, viciously
demanding and even rude
-Transformation which occurred include
physically and mentally.
-She became more healthy,and she learn to love
and be nice to people and she loved Martha
as well.
• Colin Craven
-Born in the same year as Mary and his mother’s
death results in the garden to be locked.
-Mary’s cousin
-Became tyrannical
-Initially he was weak due to the environment
he grew up
-Became masculine due to the secret garden
Themes
• Children needs love and care as a part of the
growing process.
-Magic is associated with Mary and her
expectations in life.
-Mary was left to wander alone and she grew up
being a child without a proper manner due to
zero guidance.
-Mary showed much interest in the garden
which was left without guidance due to the
fact that she was left without care when she
was back in India as well
-The magic that Mary felt and Colin felt was due
to the interest they had towards the garden
which gave positive changes to them.
-Reflects back to ourselves as well.
ISSUES
• Correlation of nature and human being
Eg:
Mary and Colin became better individuals due to
the environment.
Dickson Sowerby is happy and healthy due to
the nature.
• Importance of getting proper love and care
Eg:
Mary was abondoned without care and love
even when her parents existed
Colin was left alone due to his mother’s death
and his father feared that he will end up like
him.
