When German and Austrian children start first grade, their parents or grandparents give them a large decorated cardboard cone filled with toys, candy, chocolate, school supplies, and other gifts called a Schultüte. It is a tradition meant to make the first day of school a little sweeter for the children. Photos are often taken with the Schultüte to commemorate the big day.
