Geography
 San Francisco is located
in the state of
California on the West
Coast of the United
States.
 It is the 13th most
populous city in the
United States.
Geography
 The eastern side of the city
is bordered by the San
Francisco Bay and the western
side is bordered by the Pacific
Ocean.
 Several picturesque islands—
Alcatraz, Treasure Island, small
portions of Alameda
Island, Red Rock Island,
and Angel Island—are also
part of the city.
History
 San Francisco was founded in 1776
by colonists from Spain who built a
fort and a mission there.
 The name of the city means Saint
Francis in Spanish.
 The Bridge is actually named for the Golden Gate Strait,
the narrow entrance between the Pacific Ocean and the San
Francisco Bay. The strait was named by explorer and U.S.
Army officer John C. Frémont, who marvelled at its beauty
in 1846—two years before the discovery of gold in
California.
The Golden Gate Bridge
 One of the reasons that the
Golden Gate Bridge is so
visible is because of its color.
However, when plans were
initially being made, the Navy
wanted it painted black and
yellow so that it would be
easily visible for passing
ships. The bridge was instead
painted international orange,
because it fits in better with
the surroundings.
The Golden Gate Bridge
 Ocean Beach is a beach on the
west coast of San
Francisco, California, United
States, bordering the Pacific
Ocean. It is popular with
surfers and participants in
bonfire parties.
 The pier, originally created as a
fishing spot, is the ideal place
to cast a line into the sea or
watch the sunset over the
water.
Ocean Beach
 Alcatraz means pelican in
Spanish. The rocky pelicans’
island in San Francisco Bay
was a military fort before it
became a prison.
 From 1934 to 1963 it was a
federal prison for some of the
most dangerous civilian
prisoners. Among its
famous denizens were Al
Capone, George Kelly,
and Robert Stroud.
Alcatraz
 Chinatown which is the best-known Chinese community in
the United States, is also probably the least understood
minority community in the city.
Chinatown
 The colorful shops and
restaurants of Grant Avenue
mask a slum of crowded
tenements and sweatshops
that has the highest
population density in an
already densely populated
city.
 Many of those who reside in
Chinatown are more recent
immigrants, particularly
from Hong Kong.
Chinatown
 An icon of San Francisco, the cable car system
forms part of the intermodal urban transport
network operated by the San Francisco
Municipal Railway. Of the 23 lines established
between 1873 and 1890, only three remain.
