Self-Swot Analysis for Kaylah Crompton
Introduction
Having spent four years out of high school until I finally decided on a life path, I truly believe
that having a clear and distinct career plan is vital. Only recently did I determine that I want to
continue studying to complete a masters or graduate certificate to be recognized as an Australian
certified psychologist. I am unsure of how much further study or how much time will be required of
me after my undergraduate qualification in 2022. The following self-analysis will include a clear-cut
career outlook – which I must be able to adapt to and alter throughout my life to fit my ever-growing
self. There is a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats table of my own career impacting
characteristics (see appendices 1) to analyse what I must change and what I can utilize to help me
achieve my goals. This will be implemented into my action plan which will help me over the next
coming years to achieve my dream positions and career growth.
My perspective career launches by working with at risk kids or in a juvenile detention centre
trying to rehabilitate children into society with the ability to handle their personal issues as to not
become repeat offenders. I then plan to take on work navigating group therapy classes, such as DBT,
CBT and more, preferably within the prison system or psychiatric hospital outpatients/inpatients.
Following, I will build a personal business of counselling, psychology, and therapy in which I can
work my own hours whilst supporting myself, I will return to university to study health sciences,
majoring in dietetics and naturopathy. During which I will continue to run group therapy classes, but
only night sessions to offer flexibility with my schedule. Upon graduating, I will open a naturopathic
retail business with home-grown, tailor-made, natural medicines (see appendices 2). Furthermore, I
plan to return to study again to complete a doctorate in studying the connection between mind and
body and how gut health and nervous systems impact mental health. Ideally I would like to find a way
to seek funding for further research on the association with gut health and mental health and
concurrently offer experienced psychology services along with qualified dietician advise to those who
experience gut issues and in turn struggle with mental health or vice versa.
Identification Methods
As a psychology student, I have identified my personal strengths, weaknesses, opportunities,
and threats using a variety of industry appropriate assessments. This includes self-analysis,
particularly from my self-portfolio and the Griffith attributes table in appendices 3, feedback from
family and friends, and renowned measurement methods integrating the work of the most
distinguished psychologists. These assessments and surveys included the extended ‘Career Fitter’
(Holland, 1996), The Motivational Appraisal Personal Potential (MAPP) Career Test (Young, 2007),
The Enneagram (Aspell, 1997), The Meyer-Brigg’s Temperament Indicator (MBTI) (Ciro, 2017), The
Big Five Personality Test (Goldberg, 1992) and lastly, a human resources favourite: The Domanince,
Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness scale (DISC) (Carter, 2017), (see appendices 4 for
results). In conjunction, various government resources have been used to help identify my most
suitable positions as well as any gaps in the market. Both results and any identified characteristics
throughout this report have been colour co-ordinated to display which of these tests determined the
trait. This will help if there are any contradictory results. The results of these personality and career
tests have been implemented throughout this assignment to identify as many characteristics as
possible and determines how best my personality type will alter and counter my weaknesses.
S.W.O.T Analysis
I have taken my three most important traits from each of the S.W.O.T categories and created
an action plan which will help me become as employable as possible. Taking action to develop and
further my strengths will result in the ability to display thorough and strong skills. When ridding myself
3. 3
of weaknesses, it seems that they are all so related to each other that countering one negative behaviour
could result in a snowballing effect. Although I am unable to see the immediate result of my
opportunities, it is important that I remember to look at the positives and remember what opportunities
I have available. However, it may be challenging to stand out, with 1 in 4 PhD graduates unable to
secure a job within their field (Jackson, 2015). Analysing the threats to my career will make me aware
of how to reduce factors that stand in the way of my dream job.
Analysis of Strengths
1. Planning and Templates
I love planning and creating templates. It is something that helps me understand what needs to be
done and ensure that I do not forget anything. It also reduces my stress as I never have to worry
about missing something as it is always on my planner.
2. Computer Design
Whilst only a new skill, I really enjoy 3D design and 2D digital art, as mentioned on my
pebblepad portfolio and would love to spend my spare time designing. It would be amazing to
have the option to 3D design custom branded products for my company.
3. Management and Marketing
Management and marketing are fun to practice, from the business plans and conceptual statements
to the initial idea and designs and the digital design and social media implementation. I like
creating marketing campaigns and branding packages for things that I brainstorm and that I think
myself and society need locally.
Analysis of Weaknesses
1. Resistant to Change
This weakness is a direct result of my first strength. I do not like being unable to fulfill a routine or
acting spontaneously, I struggle to wind down when feeling the high emotions that come when
faced to these situations. In the workplace, inconsistencies affect me the most. However, I do need
to remember that because of this, my life is structured and planned. I believe that this itself is a
strength.
2. Public Speaking / Introverted Personality
I am a very introverted person. This affects me negatively within the workplace and at university,
it reduces my ability to socialise and build strong friendships. That is why it is so important to me
to alter this characteristic of mine. I began last year, when I started volunteering for numerous on
campus programs (Guild, GBSA and Griffith Mates). Despite my attempt at exposure therapy to
large groups of people being successful, I still struggle to start a conversation one on one with
people.
3. Fear of Failure
As I avoid tasks due to a fear of failure, I seek to perfect my work and myself. I am highly self-
critical and struggle to feel that I am good enough. This could be viewed as a perfectionist’s
behaviour, which supports my personal experience and personality types. A leadership role could
be ideal for me, as I I could manage separate job positions, and I could combine the tasks of each
of my employees to create a precise and accurate team.
4. 4
Analysis of Opportunities
1. Further Study
From the opportunity of government funded study to study at university to a new degree and my
masters; I am thrilled to have to continue studying to pursue my career, and to have the opportunity
for industry knowledge to grow throughout my career.
2. Self-Employment Opportunities
Ever since I was in senior high school, I had a passion for running small, local businesses and always
new I wanted to work for myself. The fact that my career outcome leads to the only thing that I have
known I wanted to achieve is exciting and I know I am on the right path.
3. A new market for the relationship between gut health and mental health
The fact that there is an emerging and growing health market, according to seek (2021), psychology,
youth and social workers, as well as medical professionals were on the list of most needed employees
in Australia. This means that there are lots of opportunities for me to get a job within my desired
fields.
Analysis of Threats
1. No placement / industry training
The fact that I have not experienced placement or have references from within the industry may lead
to me struggling to get a job. The working industry is very competitive, and I am sure that many
graduates may be looking at beginning their career in the same place as I am.
2. Too much respect for the chain of command
Whilst it is good to respect your superiors, sometimes, too much respect is unhealthy. It is important
to be able to question someone higher ranked than you, as you can clarify tasks, ensure the team are
using the most efficient techniques, and get helpful feedback so you can do your job to the best of
your ability.
3. No unique skillset
A unique and strong skillset is important and being able to show prospective employers that you have
obtained this, is vital. Whilst I excel at digital and media marketing, it’s not that hard to stumble upon
people who have these skills nowadays. However, I believe I am more passionate and creative than
those I am competing against
Action Plans
The following action plan has utilized the growth advice for my personality type which I feel I can
personally relate to. The steps are ways in which I can see resulting in self growth and career growth.
Particularly, the goal is to turn around my weaknesses so that they become healthy and beneficial
traits, as well as strengthen my favourite skills. As a type 4, it says that I often overwhelm myself as
my large plans aren’t broken into small achievable goals. Alongside the type 1 personality where I
compartmentalize, meaning that if I create a clear and concise plan, I will follow it strictly, I have
created my action plan in step form.
Strengths:
1. Trait: Planning and Organisation / Template Creation
Tactic: I want to begin putting my plans mobile, this includes using google calendar and
ensuring that everything is put on both paper and my phone. Furthermore, creating my own
5. 5
printable inserts and templates and selling them would be a great way to practice making
templates. This could be diaries, budgets or business plans. These could also help me in the
future if I ever find myself low on time or struggling to remember what content I should
include.
Achievable Date: Begin now: Achieve in one year.
2. Trait: Design and Creativity Skills – Computer Based
Tactic Further study: add on 3D design as a major to my degree. Also, begin routinely
designing clothes and homewares or branding objects, such as packaging. This will help
develop skills as well as stay up to date with the programs.
Achievable Date: Begin now: achieve late 2023.
3. Trait: Marketing and management
Tactic: I love marketing, that is why I aim to complete 6 fully fleshed out business plans
inclusive of financial details and social media as well as marketing plans. I will attach this to
my professional portfolio and throughout my career, I intend to implement my favourite
ideas, such as the C(h)air Cap, AAA and Twisted Circus (see current portfolio)
Achievable Date: Begin now: Complete upon graduation.
Weaknesses
4. Trait: Resistant to Change
Tactic: When a change comes up, face it by asking the reason as to why. According to human
resources studies, being briefed on altered circumstances can improve flexibility. I will firstly
begin by asking this within my personal life then implementing into study, then professional
contexts.
Achievable Date: Begin now
5. Trait: Public Speaking / Introverted Personality
Tactic: To help with one-on-one conversation, confidence and talking, I will begin
toastmasters in trimester 2. I was selected as one of 10 Brisbane students in 2015 to compete
in a national competition and was placed runner-up. Thebuild-up to this achievement is what
taught me how to be confident and continue the natural flow of a conversation.
Achievable Date: Trimester 3, 2021
6. Trait: Fear of Failure
Tactic: Create a solid morning routine including practicing positive affirmations and
meditations as to reduce stress and self-criticism. Do so when feeling overwhelmed or when I
am unable to begin a task throughout the day also.
Achievable Date: Begin now: Be a habit by Trimester 2, 2021.
Opportunities
7. Trait: Further Study
Tactic: To complete further study, I will follow my study plan in appendices 5 which will
help me achieve the education I need for my career in a timely manner.
Achievable Date: 2023.
8. Trait: Self-Employment Opportunities
Tactic: As mentioned in step 1 and 3, I will try to begin managing small businesses offering
services, homewares, clothing and art. This will help my skills in self-employment, and
ensure I am prepared for when I graduate.
Achievable Date: Begin now.
9. Trait: New market and job increase
Tactic: Attempt to find placement now, when there is a high demand for staff within my
dream industry. This way, I have become a part of the team when they needed it most and I
6. 6
may have the ability to continue working throughout my study and post-graduation.
Achievable Date: 2022
Threats
10. Trait: No placement / industry training
Tactic: To help assist with my lack of industry experience and no placement training, in my
degree plan I outlined trimesters to apply for exterior and university-based training. These
are: Blue Card, Lifeline counselling course and crisis helpline volunteering, ACT Therapy
Training, Strengths Profile Certification, First Aid & CPR, ACT Therapy Certification.
Achievable Date: 1 certification per trimester until 2023 (see appendices 5).
11. Trait: Too much respect for the chain of command
Tactic: To challenge my superiors, I will begin by reaching out to my current teachers and
asking for feedback on my assignments, this will help make me more comfortable with
constructive feedback. This will also help me to be more direct and assertive, helping me
question the procedure, and as mentioned in step 4, not become so rigid with my assessment
writing skills.
Achievable Date: End of trimester 1.
12. Trait: No unique skillset
Tactic: As mentioned in step 3, I plan to expand my portfolio and strengthen my skillset as to
make myself stand out and be the best candidate. Hopefully, this will include some clothing
designs and 3D modelled homewares. This will also create a harmonious balance between my
work and personal life.
Achievable Date: Begin now: Complete upon graduation.
Conclusion
Overall, I am very happy with the steps I plan to implement to help me succeed. To me, the most
important part of this reflection is that I have a clear plan to implement which I am passionate about
and am excited to complete. Being able to recognise my weaknesses has helped me realise where I
need to put more effort in regarding both study and personal life. I believe it has been beneficial to
complete personality tests as I can now implement the appropriate strategies for certain aspects of my
life, for example the best approach to studying for INTJ types. I look forward to building my portfolio
and am excited to implement my action plan immediately.
