- An architecture where you don’t worry about the infrastructure to a large extent. Suitable for microservices. Each unit of computation (function) runs independently with limited computation power and the platform manages load balancing, horizontal scaling, and security. Sometimes called FaaS. Evolution of PaaS (e.g. Heroku) which is an evolution from IaaS (e.g. EC2). Billed by time (e.g. 100 millisecond chunks)
- Prototyping: it’s very easy and quick When building a hobby project or when traffic is low: it’s very cheap For scheduled jobs, e.g. ETL When you don’t want to worry about infrastructure: machines, VPCs, security, etc. When horizontal scalability is more important than guaranteed performance
- When guaranteed performance is critical Cold-boot takes time When the code spends most of its time waiting When the operation is highly parallelisable When the operation would take more than a few minutes When you’ve got too many dependencies!
