Rugby originated in England in the 19th century from the rules developed at Rugby School, where the name comes from. It is a contact team sport regulated worldwide by the International Rugby Board, which recognizes 116 national unions. Rugby and soccer evolved from the same medieval origins in Britain but defined themselves as opposites in the mid-19th century in terms of strength versus skill and fair versus unfair play.
