This document describes a study that used design of experiments to optimize the mechanical properties of parts made with fused deposition modeling (FDM) using polylactic acid (PLA) filament. The study evaluated the effects of various FDM process parameters like extrusion temperature, print orientation, layer thickness, and print speed on the mechanical properties of PLA parts, including yield strength, Young's modulus, and fracture toughness. Using a Taguchi design of experiments approach, the number of experiments needed was reduced from over 1,000 to just 144. Tensile and fracture test specimens were 3D printed and tested to determine how the process parameters affected the mechanical properties.
